Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Matthew Chapter 13 the parable is told of the farmer whose servants spot weeds growing among the grain. The servants recommend that the weeds be pulled out immediately. What is the farmer's reply?

Answer: He tells them to leave the weeds there

Jesus tells this parable in Matthew 13:24-30 to teach us about the Kingdom of Heaven. The farmer tells his workers to let the weeds and grain grow together until harvest time. When the harvest comes, the weeds will be pulled out first and burned, while the grain will be put in the barn.

In the same way, Jesus says, good and bad will exist side by side in this world until the end of the ages arrives.
2. Luke Chapter 18 tells the parable of a widow who pesters someone until he gives in to her request. Whom does she pester?

Answer: The judge

Jesus teaches that we have to pray without ceasing. The widow in Luke 18:2-5 keeps going back to the judge in her city to ask for justice. At first he refuses to grant her request, but she wears him out. In the end, he is even afraid that she might hit him as well!
3. In the parable recorded in Luke Chapter 16, a poor man lies at the gate of a rich man's estate. What is the name of the poor man?

Answer: Lazarus

When Lazarus dies in Luke 16:22, he is taken to heaven to sit at Abraham's side. The rich man also dies but goes to the place of suffering. He orders Abraham to send Lazarus to bring him a drop of water. He also pleads that Lazarus be sent to warn his five brothers to lead better lives. Abraham replies that they will not mend their ways even if someone comes back from the dead.
4. Matthew Chapter 13:44 tells the parable of a man who discovers a treasure hidden on a piece of land. What does he do with the treasure before he buys the land?

Answer: Covers it up again

A very short parable, one of three, about the Kingdom of Heaven. The man who discovers the treasure, leaves it in place and covers it up before selling everything he owns to buy the land.
5. In Matthew Chapter 20, the owner of a vineyard hires workers. Just before sunset he sees another group of workers standing idle. Why do they say they are not employed?

Answer: No one hired them

At the end of the day when all the workers are paid, those who worked all day expect to be paid more than the latecomers. The owner pays all the workers the same wage, asking those who grumble, "Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?" (Matthew 20:15)
6. In Matthew Chapter 13 the characters are fishers with a dragnet who sort out good and useless fish from their catch. Who does Jesus say will do the same with humankind at the end of the world?

Answer: Angels

Matthew Chapter 13 verses 49 and 50 record, "The angels will come and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the furnace of fire; there men will weep and gnash their teeth."
7. In Luke Chapter 7, Jesus tells Simon the Pharisee the story of two people in debt to a money lender. What does the money lender do to the debtors?

Answer: Writes off their debt

Following the incident of the sinful woman who wet Jesus' feet with her tears and dried them with her hair, Jesus tells the parable of the debtors in Luke 7:41-42. One debtor owes far more than the other. Simon has to admit that the debtor who owes more is more grateful to the money lender. Jesus explains that in the same way the sinful woman owes more and loves him more when he forgives her sins.
8. What is the occupation of the man who discovers the valuable pearl in Matthew Chapter 13?

Answer: Merchant

It is the merchant who discovers the pearl and then sells all he has to own it in Matthew 13:45-46.
9. In Luke 13 the owner of the unproductive fig tree complains to the gardener that he cannot find fruit on the tree. For how many years has he been looking in vain for figs on the tree?

Answer: Three

Jesus tells the story to illustrate how patient God is. When the owner wants to cut down the tree, the gardener asks for one more year to dig around the tree and feed the ground, buying the tree more time to produce fruit.
10. A Pharisee and a tax collector pray at the temple in Luke Chapter 18. The Pharisee tells God what a good person he is. The tax collector merely cries out for mercy. Who does Jesus say goes home justified?

Answer: The tax collector

The prayer of the Pharisee is all about his own good deeds. The tax collector does not praise himself but throws himself on God's mercy. Jesus adds at the end of the parable, "Every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted." (Luke 18:14)
