Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When both their husbands died, Ruth decided to go with her mother in law Naomi back to Bethlehem. However, Naomi had another daughter in law, who decided to stay in Moab. What was her name?

Answer: Orpah

Naomi and her husband Elimelech lived in Bethlehem but sadly there was a terrible drought there, so the couple decided to take their two sons to the land of Moab to find food. Whilst they were there the sons both married local girls. Elimelech and his two sons died, and Naomi decided to return to her home. She told her daughters in law her plans and said that they should go home to their mothers. Orpah did so, but Ruth stayed with Naomi and went to Bethlehem with her.
(Ruth 1:8-22).
2. Martha and Mary were sisters. What was the name of their brother who Jesus raised from the dead?

Answer: Lazarus

Martha and Mary and their brother Lazarus were good friends of Jesus, and when Lazarus was gravely ill the sisters sent word asking him to come at once. However, Jesus delayed starting the journey and by the time he arrived at his friend's home Lazarus had been dead and in his tomb for four days. Jesus moved the stone at the entrance to the tomb and raised Lazarus from the dead. (John 11:1-46).
3. Moses' mother left him in the bulrushes for the pharaoh's daughter to find. When pharaoh's daughter did find him, his sister Miriam ran up and offered to find a Hebrew woman who would care for him. Moses' mother was then paid to care for the child. She also had another son. What was his name?

Answer: Aaron

The Israelites had been in Egypt for a very long time and for most of that time the Egyptians had been kind to them because they were grateful to Joseph who had saved the country from famine. Sometime after Joseph's death they began to become impatient with these foreigners who lived in their land but did not worship their gods.

The Egyptians began to make life difficult for the Hebrews and eventually began killing their children. Miriam and Moses mother put the child in a small waterproof container and floated it down the river at the time when pharaoh's daughter came to bathe.

She loved and protected him from then on. When he grew up, Moses and his brother Aaron visited the pharaoh and asked him to let the Hebrews go. (Exodus 1:6-22 and 9:1-2)
4. Who was King Solomon's mother?

Answer: Bathsheba

One day King David was taking a stroll on the roof when he saw a beautiful woman bathing. He asked a servant who she was; the servant said that she was called Bathsheba, and was Uriah's wife. Uriah was away at war so, although he knew that adultery was wrong, he sent for Bathsheba that night and slept with her.

When she discovered that she was pregnant David sent word to the commander of his army to send Uriah to the front line where he was sure to be killed. Uriah did die in battle and David and Bathsheba married. Unfortunately the first baby died but then they had a boy together who they called Solomon. (Samuel II 11:1-26 and 12: 16-25)
5. The sisters Leah and Rachel were married to the same man. What was his name?

Answer: Jacob

Jacob wanted to marry the beautiful Rachel, but her father Laban said that he must first work for him for seven years. He worked for the seven years but at the wedding Leah, Rachel's sister, was substituted under a veil and Jacob unwittingly married her instead. He worked for seven more years, and then was at last allowed to marry Rachel. (Genesis 29:15-28).
6. How many sets of brothers were there amongst Jesus twelve disciples?

Answer: 3

There was Simon Peter and Andrew, James and John the sons of Zebedee (Matthew 10:2-4) and James the son of Alphaeus and his brother Lebaeus also known as Thaddaeus. In Acts Lebaeus is referred to as Judas, but is not to be confused with Judas Iscariot the betrayer. (Acts 1:13).
7. How many sons did Jacob have?

Answer: 12

Jacob had twelve sons in all: six from his first wife Leah, two from his second wife Rachel, two from Leah's servant Zilpah and two from Rachel's servant Bilpah . The twelve tribes of Israel are said to have descended from twelve of his sons. (Genesis 29:30-35 and 30:1-24)
8. What was the name of Jesus' foster father?

Answer: Joseph

Joseph the carpenter of Nazareth was, like Mary, descended from King David. There is scarcely a mention of him in the bible, and no recorded dialogue from him. It is thought that he may have been an older man, a widower perhaps, who married Mary when she became pregnant.
9. We all know the story of Cain who murdered his brother Abel, but who was Adam and Eve's third son?

Answer: Seth

After Abel was killed Adam and Eve had another son. His name was Seth and Eve believed that he had been sent as a replacement for Abel (Genesis 4:25). Seth had a son called Enosh (Genesis 4:25-26).
10. What was the relationship between Mary the mother of Jesus, and Elizabeth the mother of John the Baptist?

Answer: Cousins

Elizabeth was the cousin of Mary (Luke 1:26). This is based on the fact that Elizabeth's ancestor Levi was the brother of Mary's ancestor Judah, so they were not first cousins as would have been the case if they had parents who were siblings. The connection was further back, so they were distant cousins.
