Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. David, the son of Jesse, was the great-grandson of Boaz and Ruth.

Answer: True

True. According to Scripture, David was the great-grandson of Boaz and Ruth. Ruth 4:17 states Boaz and Ruth were the parents of Obed, who was the father of Jesse. Meanwhile, Jesse was the father of David, making him the great grandson of Boaz and Ruth. Ruth was a Gentile, coming from Moab, as per Ruth 1:4.

The names Boaz, Ruth, Obed, Jesse and David are included in the genealogy of Jesus, as per Matthew 1:5-6.
2. Rebekah was the daughter of Laban.

Answer: False

False. Rebekah was the sister or Laban, as per Genesis 24:29. Laban's daughters were Rachel and Leah.

Rebekah was also the wife of Isaac and they had two sons -- Jacob and Esau. Jacob ended up marrying both Rachel and Leah.
3. According to Scripture, after Vashti was deposed as queen, she married a direct descendent of Joseph.

Answer: False

False. After Vashti was deposed as queen there is no further mention of her in Scripture. Using the NKJV, her name appears eleven times in the Old Testament with all the appearances in the first two chapters of Esther.

According to Esther 1:12, Vashti refused a request of Ahasuerus, king of the Persian empire, to appear before a banquet and show her beauty. (In the NIV, Ahasuerus is known as Xerxes.) Scripture goes on to tell of the king opting to depose Vashti, paving the way for Esther to become queen.
4. Ehud was a left-handed judge of Israel.

Answer: True

True. Judges 3:15 states Ehud, a judge of Israel, was left-handed. Ehud was the son of Gera, a Benjamite, and is described as "a deliverer" for the people of Israel.

He is the only person in the Christian Bible who is named and described as being left-handed. There are instances in the Bible in which people are described as being a southpaw, but they are not named. For example, Judges 20:16 tell of the Benjamites having seven hundred select men who were left-handed and "every one could sling a stone at a hair's breadth and not miss."
5. Joshua's original name was Hoshea.

Answer: True

True. Joshua's original name was Hoshea, according to Numbers 13:16. In the NKJV, it simply states: "These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua." No further information is given about the name change.

It is believed by many scholars Moses changed Hoshea's name to Joshua due to the fact he had a special relationship with him.

Joshua was one of two men out of a group of twelve commissioned by Moses to serve as spies in the land of Canaan who returned with a positive report. The other spy who returned with a positive report was Caleb.
6. Peter, Andrew and Philip -- three of the original Twelve Disciples -- all came from Bethsaida.

Answer: True

True. All three disciples came from Bethsaida, a fishing community on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Details can be found in John 1:44. Peter and Andrew were brothers.

It was at Bethsaida that Jesus miraculously restored the sight of an unnamed blind man, as per Mark 8:22-26.
7. Mary and Martha were sisters of Lazarus.

Answer: True

Mary and Martha were sisters of Lazarus. Details can be found in John 11:1. They lived in Bethany, a community just outside Jerusalem in Biblical days.

According to the 11th chapter of John, Lazarus died and Christ miraculously brought him back to life, even though Lazarus had been buried in a tomb for four days.
8. Mary Magdalene is mentioned no less than twelve times in the Book of Acts.

Answer: False

False. Outside of the four Gospels, there is no mention of Mary Magdalene in the New Testament. However, there is mention in the Book of Acts of two different women named Mary.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, is mentioned in Acts 1:14, while Mary, the mother of John Mark is mentioned in Acts 12:12.
9. Paul was made aware of divisions in the early church at Corinth by people in the household of Martha.

Answer: False

False. Paul was made aware of divisions in the church at Corinth by people who lived in the household of Chloe, as per 1 Corinthians 1:11.

Martha lived in Bethany, a small community just outside of Jerusalem. There is no documentation of her ever living in Corinth, an ancient city in Greece. In fact, there is no documentation in Scripture that she ever met Paul, although it is possible.
10. The Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts are both addressed to Theophilus.

Answer: True

True. The two New Testament books are both addressed to Theophilus. Both books were written by Luke, a physician and a worker in the early church. However, no one knows for certain who Theopilus actually was.

The common belief is Theophilus was a prominent official in the Roman government or a lawyer who represented Paul in his trial before Felix.
