Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cain, Abel, ___

Answer: Seth

Cain and Abel were the sons of Adam and Eve, the first children mentioned in the Bible. Cain was the older son and has the unfortunate distinction of being the Bible's first murderer. His victim was his younger brother, Abel. Later God gave Eve another son, Seth, to help her overcome the grief of Abel's loss. These are the only children of Adam and Eve named in the Bible.
2. Ham, Shem, ___

Answer: Japeth

Ham, Shem, and Japeth were the sons of Noah. The story of Noah and his family is found in the book of Genesis. Evil had consumed the earth during Noah's times, so God decided to destroy everything through a flood. Noah was a righteous man and God decided to save him and his family. Noah spent years building a huge ark to shield his family, along with various animals and birds, during the flood.

The ark had 8 people - Noah and his wife, their three sons and their wives.
3. Abraham, Isaac, ___

Answer: Jacob

Abraham is the father of Isaac, who in turn is the father of Jacob. These three men are considered the Patriarchs by both Jews and Christians. God made a covenant with Abraham that his descendants would outnumber the stars of the sky and sand on the seashore.

This was fulfilled through his son Isaac. Isaac had two sons, Esau and Jacob. Though Jacob was the younger son, he took his elder brother's birthright and blessings through deceit. Ultimately he repented and was forgiven and it was through him that the Twelve Tribes of Israel were formed.
4. Eliphaz, Bildad, ___

Answer: Zophar

These are three friends of Job mentioned by name in the Biblical book named after him. When they heard of the misfortune that befell him, they came to comfort him. However, instead of comforting him, they instead began pointing out his flaws and sins as being reasons for his suffering.
5. Shadrach, Meshach, ___

Answer: Abednego

This account takes place during the time the Israelites were taken to Babylon in exile by King Nebuchadnezzar II and is found in the Biblical book of Daniel. Originally named Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, these Jewish men were friends of Daniel. In Babylon, they were given the names of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Nebuchadnezzar II decreed that all the people of the kingdom must bow down before his golden statue.

These three men were found to disobey the law, refusing to bow before anyone but God.

The king ordered for them to be thrown into a fiery furnace as punishment, but they were protected by God, and emerged from the furnace unscathed.
6. Melchior, Caspar, ____

Answer: Balthazar

The Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament is the only one among the four gospels to mention the Magi (Wise Men) visiting Jesus after his birth. Even so, it does not mention the number of Magi or any of their names. However, the Western Christian tradition has linked the number of gifts detailed - gold, frankincense and myrrh - to the number of Magi and set the number as three.

The most commonly used names for the three are Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar.
7. Peter, James, ___

Answer: John

The apostles Peter, James and John are regarded as being part of Jesus' "Inner Circle". Even though He spent time with all the 12 apostles, it was these three who were with Him on special occasions like the Transfiguration, where the earthly and divine nature of Jesus are shown together.
8. Matthew, Luke, ___

Answer: Mark

The gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are the first three books of the New Testament. These three are often referred to as synoptic gospels. All three narrate events in largely the same sequence and there is a significant overlap in the stories covered.
9. John, Mark, ___

Answer: Matthew

The common bonds between these three men are that they were apostles of Jesus and also wrote a gospel each that is included in the New Testament of the Bible. There are other books, found later in time, that were written by apostles and known as gospels like the Gospel of Thomas, and the Gospel of Peter.

These are not accepted by the Church and do not form part of the Bible. Among those included in the Bible, John's is considered the most unique and generally follows a pattern different from the other three by Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
10. Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, ____

Answer: John Chrysostom

Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom are known as the "Three Hierarchs". These three men were bishops of the early Church and were instrumental in shaping Christian theology. Basil the Great was a Byzantine bishop in Cappadocia, Asia Minor, while the other two held the position of Archbishop of Constantinople (now Istanbul) at different points in time.

These three are considered saints in various Christian traditions including Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Anglicanism.
