Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Sabbat or festival, celebrates the first signs of spring. It has many names including Imbolc, Candlemas and the Festival of Bride. At this time we decorate our altars with snowdrops, white candles and Bride's crosses. On which date is it held?

Answer: February 2nd

February 29th only occurs in leap years, March 15th is the ides of March and March 1st is St David's day in Wales. Bride is pronounced "breed".
2. This Sabbat is held on October 31st. It is a time when Wiccans remember their ancestors and its also the last day of our year. What is it called?

Answer: Samhain

Halloween is the Christian day All Hallow's Eve. Wiccans use the Celtic name Samhain (pronounced sow-wain). We have pumpkins and apples at this time. If you cut an apple in half through the centre, the seeds make a pentacle.
3. Yule is the Sabbat we celebrate at the Winter Solstice, which is usually around December 21st. It is a time when we decorate our houses with greenery and give each other gifts. What does solstice mean?

Answer: sun stands still

Solstice comes from Latin. Yule is a fun time, in the old days the Yule log would be burned and there would be lots of drinking and feasting to celebrate the fact that winter and the dark would soon be gone. These days we usually have a chocolate Yule log as well. In my coven we try to give homemade presents.
4. This Sabbat is celebrated at the time of the spring equinox, around March 21st. The hare is very important at this time and we decorate our altars with decorated eggs, seeds and spring flowers. What is the name of this Sabbat?

Answer: Ostara

We also have chocolate eggs! Eggs are a symbol of re-birth. The hare has been changed into the Easter Bunny.
5. At Lammas, which is also known as Lughnasagh or Loaf Mass, we celebrate by making corn dollies and bread in the shape of sheaves of corn. What is the harvest we are celebrating?

Answer: corn and wheat

Lammas is the first harvest. John Barleycorn (a doll made of corn straws) is sacrificed as the corn itself has to ripen and die to make seed. Beer is also made from barley so we toast John Barleycorn before he goes on the fire.
6. This Sabbat is celebrated on May 1st by dancing around the maypole and making head-dresses out of may blossom. It is also the time when many handfastings (Wiccan weddings) take place. What is this Sabbat called?

Answer: Beltane

Oliver Cromwell tried to ban the maypole in Britain, he also tried to ban Christmas! The people carried on celebrating. May blossom comes from the hawthorn tree. The green man is the personification of nature at this time. In many old churches in England you can see images of the green man.
7. This is an autumn Sabbat. It is celebrated at the time of the autumn equinox, around September 21st. It is a time of balance and the second harvest (fruit) festival. What is it called?

Answer: Mabon

Some call this Sabbat Madron. This is a time of balance and harmony. It's the time to weigh up your positive and negative traits and try to do something about them.
8. The summer solstice is the longest day and shortest night of the year. The power of the sun has reached its peak. We decorate our altar with yellow and gold colours and sunflowers. In the UK where I live we have to get up very early in the morning to celebrate the rising sun. What is the name of this Sabbat?

Answer: Litha

Its a wonderful sight to see the sun rise over the horizon. Worth getting up for. A lot of people go to Stonehenge to see the sun rise over the stones.
9. What is it called when a coven meet at the full moon to work magic?

Answer: Esbat

Covens can meet at any time, but usually the full moon is used because that is the time of the greatest energy. My coven works mainly on healing for whoever needs and asks for it and earth healing. Not all covens do this.
10. How many Sabbats are there in the Wheel of the Year in total?

Answer: 8

The eight Sabbats follow this order. Samhain, Yule, Imbolc, Ostara, Beltane, Litha, Lammas and Mabon.
