Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the proponents of Pastafarianism, heaven includes a stripper factory and a beer volcano. Pastafarian sinners, however, will go to Pastafarian hell which is similar to Pastafarian heaven except for what?

Answer: The beer is stale and the strippers have sexually transmitted diseases

Pastafarianism is also known as the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and came about after an open letter from Bobby Henderson protested the teaching of intelligent design in Kansas public school science classes (mid 2000s). Along with this alternative view on heaven and hell, Pastafarians also believe that pirates are divine beings and that global warming is a direct result of the drop of the number of pirates since the 1800s.

Similar to Christianity, Pastafarians have a list of rules they live by called the "8 I'd Really Rather You Didn'ts" which cover how people of other faiths are to be treated, worship of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, sexual conduct and personal nutrition. The fact that two stone tablets relaying these rules were dropped on their way down Mt Salsa by Mosey and his gang of pirates apparently in part way accounts for the rather flimsy moral standards expected of Pastafarians. Hence, not many Pastafarians sin so badly they will end up in Pastafarian hell.
2. Which religion acknowledges that there are two sides to the force (light and dark, or good and evil) giving followers an innate ability to know right from wrong, rather than having a deity (or multiple deities) pass this knowledge onto believers?

Answer: Jedi

While the Jedi church has no scripture or doctrine to follow (or to define sin or evil), there is an acknowledgement of the concept of two opposing sides making up "the force". It is this acknowledgement of both sides of the force that mean followers know and can make the choice between a good or bad action. Actions taken determines if a person is 'good' or 'evil', and it is the existence of this choice that is necessary for free will.
3. Ásatrú is another religion that recognises good and evil, although neither is constant, meaning that it depends on the situation as to whether the action is good or evil, as the action has been influenced and shaped by the past and present. In which region did Ásatrú begin, thousands of years ago?

Answer: Northern Europe

Ásatrú was practiced in England, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Scandinavia long before the introduction of Christianity to the same lands.

Proponents of Ásatrú believe that one major lesson to be learned is that right and wrong DO exist, even there is no definitive list of sins within the religion itself. The religion is based on a set of Nine Noble Virtues including: Courage, Discipline, Fidelity, Honour, Hospitality, Industriousness, Perseverance, Self-Reliance and Truth. These virtues come from the wisdom of the Norse gods including Odin, Thor and Tyr (among others).
4. The Church of Satan have a range of basic 'rules' that followers should adhere to. Amongst this list includes the Nine Satanic Sins. Which of the following sins is considered by the Church of Satan as being the 'Cardinal Sin'?

Answer: Stupidity

Among the Nine Satanic Sins are stupidity, pretentiousness, solipsism, self-deceit, herd conformity, lack of perspective, forgetfulness of past orthodoxies, counterproductive pride, and lack of aesthetics. What these sins boil down to, basically, is to be aware of what is going on around you, be an individual, treat others as they treat you, and don't act conceited (unless you are making fun of yourself).

There are also the Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth (how to get on in the world) and the Nine Satanic Statements (about Satan) which are part of the basics of Satanism. Take the time to have a read of them - they are in line with a lot of other religions' expectations and make Satanism not so scary and intimidating as you may think.
5. Googlism (belief in Google (yes, the search engine!) as being a deity) has a list of ten commandments. What is the punishment for breaking any of these commandments?

Answer: The sinners must punish themselves as they see fit

The Church of Google website states that sinners must punish themselves as they see fit for any broken commandments or sins. Commandments relate to misspelling, using hotlinks, plagiarism, use of other search engines, and not using the word "google" as a verb to describe other search engines.
6. Modern Rastafari beliefs are quite different to those that were introduced early on in the movement. Which type of people were seen as 'evil' to followers of Rastafari (in the earlier days)?

Answer: White people

In the early days of the Rastafari movement there was belief that white people (who ruled from Rome) were evil and that they would eventually become the servants of blacks.

Modern Rastafari has expanded to include white members and in the mid-1970s the belief system was revised to be inclusive of more types of people. In general, Rastafari strive to be peaceful people with the belief that God makes himself known through humanity and that God is found within every person. As such, all life is precious and important and should be preserved and protected.
7. According to Christianity, Jesus died for all sinners. But the Dude (from the film 'The Big Lebowski') on which Dudeism is centred, does WHAT for all sinners?

Answer: Takes it easy

Dudeism is itself torn between deciding if it is a religion or a 'worldview'. It compares itself to several mainstream religions yet also claims that religion gets too complex and that's where "everything can go wrong". Dudeism tries to keep it simple by taking things easy and encouraging followers to be "true to yourself and others".

'The Big Lebowski' (the film first released in 1998) is considered the founding myth of Dudeism in the same way that the Christian Gospels are to Christian religions.
8. Many religions recognise sin as a part of life and that penance should be taken to negate sins made. Does Wicca have any concept of sin as a part of the religion?

Answer: No

Wiccan's believe that there is no one source of good or evil and that each person is responsible for their own actions. Wiccan's also believe that the energy of the universe flows through us all and this energy is the essence of life. This essence, however, is incomprehensible to the human mind so cannot be construed as giving us direction with our actions. As this essence has no say in how we live our lives or how to act, there are no 'rules' within the religion to break, therefore no sin.

A Wiccan also has their own god or goddess to follow and this deity respects them enough to not expect them to live beyond their capacity, or ask them to do something that they cannot do. This works both ways in that followers have no right to follow a god or goddess whose values they cannot live up to.
9. Followers of the Invisible Pink Unicorn are considered to be 'vegnautic' (having a diet that is either free of animal products or products that do harm to animals and the environment). With this in mind, what does the Invisible Pink Unicorn say is the 'ultimate evil'?

Answer: Suffering

Those that eat 'upon the flesh of their fellows' are those that cause suffering and therefore, are evil - according to Her. The Invisible Pink Unicorn was revealed to the world in 1990 through the wonder of the internet and a usenet forum. The Invisible Pink Unicorn is used to argue that belief in anything supernatural is arbitrary and easily transferable to another entity.

American fiction author, Steve Eley, said that "Invisible Pink Unicorns are beings of great spiritual power. We know this because they are capable of being invisible and pink at the same time. Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them."
10. Protection from evil always come in handy. Amongst the Hmong Shamans, what is carried to protect the wandering shaman while he's in the spirit world?

Answer: A holy sword

Shamanism appears in several different cultures, in slightly different variations and forms. It involves a practitioner moving to an altered state of consciousness to be able to interact with the spirit world. Getting to the required state of consciousness usually requires some kind of ritual and oftentimes the inhalation of some kind of mind-altering substance, or drug.

Common to most shaman practitioners, spirits can be either malevolent (bad) or benevolent (good). These spirits can be called upon to help humans, or can cause havoc and sickness at will. To protect against evil spirits, safety whilst in the trance state is important. Ritual and sacred objects, such as a holy sword, can be used for protection. Another protection from evil spirits used by the Hmong Shamans is a rooster. Apparently the rooster shields the wanderer by making him invisible to evil spirits.
