Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Acts 9:34 tells of a member of the early church issuing the following command to a paralytic: "Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and make your bed." Who made the statement?

Answer: Peter

The statement was made by Peter, one of the original Twelve Disciples. According to Scripture, Peter issued the command in Lydda to Aeneas, a man who had been paralyzed for eight years.

Acts 9:32-35 states: "Now it came to pass, as Peter went through all parts of the country, that he also came down to the saints who dwelt in Lydda. There he found a certain man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden eight years and was paralyzed. And Peter said to him, 'Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and make your bed.' Then he arose immediately. So all who dwelt at Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord."

The ninth chapter of Acts goes on to tell of Peter traveling to Joppa and raising Dorcas, also known as Tabitha, from the dead.
2. John 1:45 tells of one of the original Twelve Disciples making this claim: "We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote -- Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Who made the statement?

Answer: Philip

Philip made the statement to Nathanael, who would later become one of the Twelve Disciples.

John 1:43-45 explains things this way: "The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, 'Follow Me.' Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote -- Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.'"

However, it appears Nathanael was not impressed with Philip's claim.

Nathanael, who many theologians believe is also known as Bartholomew in the three other Gospels, responded: "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?"

Some theologians believe Nathanael made the statement not out of contempt for the people of Nazareth, but because he knew the Scriptures stated the Messiah would come out of Bethlehem.

Verses 47 to 50 go on to tell of Nathanael visiting Jesus and being won over.
3. John 19:22 tells of a leader defiantly stating, "What I have written, I have written." Who made the statement?

Answer: Pilate

The correct answer is Pilate. According to Scripture, Pilate wrote the words 'Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews' in capital letters and they were placed on the cross. However, the chief priests took exception to the claim, stating the wording made it sound like Jesus was actually King of the Jews. They insisted the wording should state something along the line that Jesus "said" (or claimed) He was King of the Jews. Pilate responded to their claims by stating, "What I have written, I have written."

Here's how John 19:17-24 explains things: "And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, 'Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but, 'He said, I am the King of the Jews.' Pilate answered, 'What I have written, I have written.' Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. They said therefore among themselves, 'Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,' that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:
'They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.'
Therefore the soldiers did these things."
4. Luke 7:6 tells of a man having his friends make the following statement to Jesus: "Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof." Who had his friends make the statement?

Answer: Unnamed centurion

The statement was made by an unnamed centurion through his friends. According to the seventh chapter of Luke, the unnamed centurion had a servant who was seriously ill and about to die so he sent people to go to Jesus and ask Him for help.

Scripture states that Jesus decided to visit the centurion's house and when He was near it the centurion sent friends to Him saying: "Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof. Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

Luke 7:9-10 goes on state: "When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, 'I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!' And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well who had been sick."

Although centurions were the elite of a ruthless Roman killing machine, they fare remarkably well in Scripture. Feel free to play another quiz I have posted at FunTrivia based on 'caring, compassionate centurions' in Scripture.
5. Matthew 16:16 tells of one of the original Twelve Disciples boldly announcing to Jesus: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Who made the statement?

Answer: Peter

The correct answer is Peter, also known in Scripture as Simon Peter.

Matthew 16:13-20 explains things this way: "When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, 'Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?' So they said, 'Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.' He said to them, 'But who do you say that I am?' Simon Peter answered and said, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.' Jesus answered and said to him, 'Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.' Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ."

Peter, of course, would go on to deny even knowing Christ on three different occasions, just prior to His crucifixion. (See Matthew 26:69-75.)
6. "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house," is a quote that appears in Matthew 13:57. Who made the statement?

Answer: Jesus

Jesus, of course, made the statement.

Matthew 13:53-58 tells of Jesus being rejected at his hometown, Nazareth: "Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, that He departed from there. When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, 'Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? Is this not the carpenter's son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?' So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.' Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief."
7. "Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely," is a quote that appears in Mark 14:44. Who made the statement?

Answer: Judas Iscariot

Judas Iscariot is the correct answer. According to Scripture, Judas betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver and his kiss in the Garden of Gethsemane sealed the deal.

In regards to Judas Iscariot's statement that Jesus would be led away "safely", it appears what he is actually saying they would be able to arrest Christ without incident. Most times, Christ was surrounded by large crowds and to arrest Him would create tremendous opposition.

Judas, however, would be overcome with tremendous remorse and end up committing suicide, as per Matthew 27:3-10.
8. "Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well," is a quote that appears in Matthew 9:22. Who made the statement?

Answer: Jesus

According to Scripture, Jesus made the statement after a woman touched the hem of His garment when He wasn't looking and she was instantly healed. The incident took place in between events that ended in Jesus raising Jairus' daughter from the dead.

Scripture states the woman was subject to bleeding for a number of years and many people today suspect she was a hemophiliac.

Matthew 9:20-22 states: "And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment. For she said to herself, 'If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.' But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, 'Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.' And the woman was made well from that hour."

The story of the woman touching Jesus and being healed is sandwiched in between the account of Christ raising Jairus' twelve-year-old daughter from the dead. (See also Mark 5:21-43 and Luke 8:40-56.)
9. Mark 15:12 tells of a leader asking the following question of a large group of people that included the high priest and Pharisees: "What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?" Who made the statement?

Answer: Pilate

Mark 15:6-15 states: "Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested. And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion. Then the multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them. But Pilate answered them, saying, 'Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?' For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them. Pilate answered and said to them again, 'What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?' So they cried out again, 'Crucify Him!' Then Pilate said to them, 'Why, what evil has He done?' But they cried out all the more, 'Crucify Him!' So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified."

Pilate apparently did not see any grounds to condemn Jesus, but he took the easy way out and quickly agreed to the demands of others. Even though Pilate did not see Jesus guilty of charges made against Him, he had Christ 'scourged' before the crucifixion.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state the word scourged appears in only one other place in the New Testament, Matthew 27:26. Scourging describes a punishment much more severe than flogging or beating.

"The prisoner was beaten with with a whip fashioned of numerous strips of leather attached to a handle," notes in the NKJV Study Bible state. "To the leather strips were tied sharp pieces of bone and metal, which could rip and tear one's skin to shreds."
10. John 14:5 tells of one of the Twelve Disciples being perplexed and asking the following question of Jesus: "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?" Who made the statement?

Answer: Thomas

The correct answer is Thomas.

John 14:1-4 tells of Jesus making the following statement to the disciples: "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know."

However, Thomas was apparently not clear about what Jesus was actually saying so he asked the following question: "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?"

In verse six, Jesus responds by stating, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."

As one country pastor once explained in a message I heard something like thirty years ago, the statement by Jesus is as clear a road map to heaven as one will ever get.
