Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which major prophet wished that his head were waters and his eyes a fountain of tears that he might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of his people?

Answer: Jeremiah

Jeremiah is sometimes referred to as the weeping prophet. He was told in his prophetic call that he was ordained before his birth to 'root out and to pull down, and to destroy and to throw down, to build and to plant'. In Jeremiah 9:1 he bewails or laments the sins of the people.

He continues in the rest of the chapter to show the calamities which will come upon Jerusalem as a result of their disobedience to God.
2. This woman died when she was 127 years old and her husband wept over her. She was buried in the cave in the field of Machpelah. Who was her weeping husband?

Answer: Abraham

Sarah's death is recorded in Genesis 23. She died in Hebron in the land of Canaan. Abraham mourned and wept for her. After he had made an end of his weeping he made a request to acquire the field of Machpelah for a possession of a burying place. His wish was granted because he was regarded as a mighty prince among them.

At his death he was buried by his sons in the same cave. (Gen.25:8-9)
3. According to I Samuel 4:1-13, Israel was smitten by the Philistines and there was a great slaughter but what else did the man of Benjamin tell the people that caused tumultuous crying in the city?

Answer: The Ark of God was taken

The Ark of God (the Ark of the Covenant) is was central in the lives of the Israelites. It was the chest in the Most Holy Place of the tabernacle that contained the tables of the covenant (the 10 commandments), Aaron's rod that budded and the golden pot of manna.

The mercy-seat was placed on the upper lid of this chest. Two golden cherubim were at each end of the ark with their wings overshadowing the mercy-seat. The Ark of God was the symbol of God's presence among His people. It was before this ark that the High Priest would appear on the Day of Atonement to make atonement for the sins of the people. To have had the Ark taken signalled terrible calamity for the Israelites. You may refer to any of these texts for clarification on the Ark: Ex 25:10, Lev 16:2, Num 10:33, Josh 3:3, Jer 3:16.
4. Which woman went to temple and prayed to the Lord and wept sore because she was unable to conceive?

Answer: Hannah

Hannah went to the temple and tearfully poured out her complaint to the Lord because she was childless. Eli supposed that she was drunk and reproved her. When he realized that she was not drunk but of a sorrowful spirit he bid her go in peace and asked that God should grant her petition.
Hannah did indeed conceive and gave birth to Samuel who she took to the temple in Shiloh to be lent to the Lord. The Lord blessed Hannah and she gave birth to three more sons and two daughters. (I Samuel 1&2)
5. David and his men mourned and wept and fasted until even. (II Samuel 1:12) What was the cause of their tears?

Answer: Saul and Jonathan had died in battle

II Samuel 1 tells of the report of Saul's death by a young Amalekite. This young man claimed that Saul had fallen in battle and had requested that he stand on him and kill him and he had done as Saul requested. In response, David asked him if he was not afraid to lift up his hand to destroy God's anointed. David then called one of his men to fall upon the Amalekite and kill him since his mouth had testified against him.
6. In which city was Jesus when he stopped a funeral procession and told the widow 'weep not'?

Answer: Nain

Jesus was in Nain with his disciples and many other people. He was near the gate of the city as a dead man who was the only son of his mother was being taken out.
Jesus had compassion on this widow and touched the bier so that the pallbearers stood still. He then told the dead man to get up. Instantaneously, the man arose and began to speak. Fear came upon all present and God was glorified. (Luke 7:11-17)
7. Why were the widows of the early church weeping so bitterly that Peter had to put them all out of the upper room where they had congregated?

Answer: Dorcas had died.

Dorcas was a disciple in the early church who was full of good works and gave alms to the poor. When she became ill and died Peter was sent for. He was shown all the garments that Dorcas had made while she was alive. Peter put them all out and knelt down and prayed.
He then commanded the body to arise. Dorcas opened her eyes and when she saw Peter she sat up. Peter was able to present her alive to the saints and the widows. Many people in Joppa believed on the Lord because of that miracle. (Acts 9:36-43
8. John 11:25 which states that 'Jesus wept' is the shortest verse in Scripture. Is this statement true or false?

Answer: False

John 11:35 is the verse that declares that Jesus wept. This weeping took place when Jesus went to see where Lazarus' body had been lain. Shortly after weeping Jesus restored Lazarus to life. While many believed on Jesus, the Pharisees took counsel together to put him to death.
9. Who is recorded in Hebrews as offering up in the days of his flesh prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death and was heard in that he feared?

Answer: Melchisedek

10. Which prophetic book promises that at the return of Jesus, God shall wipe away all tears from the eyes of the saved?

Answer: Revelation
