Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The story begins in John chapter 4, with Jesus leaving one place to go to another. From where was he leaving?

Answer: Judea

He left Judea because of the Pharisees. They were concerned that He was baptizing more people and gaining more disciples than John the Baptist already had, even though it was actually His disciples baptizing these people. (John 4:1-2)
2. Where was Jesus's destination, once He left his original location in John 4:3?

Answer: Galilee

He was going to Galilee from Judea to get away from the Pharisees, who were hurling accusations towards Him. In John 4:44, Jesus pointed out that a prophet such as Himself had no honor in his own country, but He was welcomed in Galilee.
3. In John 4:4, Jesus had to pass through a region to get to where He was going. Where did He have to pass through?

Answer: Samaria

On His way to Galilee, He had to pass through Samaria. Jews usually didn't go there because they had no dealings with the Samaritans, but Jesus was not concerned with this, so He stopped there for awhile.
4. In John 4:6, why did Jesus stop on His journey?

Answer: He was tired.

He was tired from the journey, so He stopped to rest and refresh Himself at a place that was very important in His ancestry. This place, called Shechem, was where the LORD appeared to Abram saying, "to your offspring I will give this land." And Abram built an altar to God there, recorded in Genesis 12:6-7.
5. In John 4:6 Jesus sat down at a well. What was the name of this well?

Answer: Jacob's

Jesus was near a plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph, who was of Jesus' ancestry. The well on this site was called Jacob's well. Jacob bought the land in Genesis 33 and gave to Joseph in Genesis 48 before he died.
6. According to John 4:6, about what time of day was it when the Samaritan woman came to the well?

Answer: sixth hour

John 4:6 records that it was about the sixth hour, which is interpreted as midday or noon. The beginning of the day, in those times, was reckoned at 6 in the morning, which would be the first hour of the day.
7. In John 4:7, when the Samaritan woman came to the well, what did Jesus ask her?

Answer: Will you give Me a drink?

Jesus asked her if she would give Him a drink of water from the well. And she asked Jesus why would He ask her for anything, because she was a Samaritan and the Jews usually had no dealings with the Samaritans.
8. When Jesus told the Samaritan woman of the living water that He could give her instead, what did He tell her in John 4:16?

Answer: "Go, call your husband and come back."

She had told Jesus that she had no husband. Jesus, knowing she had no husband, told her that she had already had five husbands, and that the man she was currently with, was not her husband.
9. The Samaritan woman said that she knew that Messiah was coming and when He did, that He would explain everything to them. In John 4:26, what did Jesus say to her?

Answer: "I who speak to you am He."

Christians believe that Jesus was in fact the Messiah who was prophesied to come. This woman knew it because He had told her everything she had ever done. She immediately left her water jar and went into the town to tell the people: "come see a Man who has told me everything I have ever done, is this not the Christ?"
10. According to John 4:39 (NIV), how many Samaritans believed in Jesus because of the testimony of the woman at the well?

Answer: Many of the Samaritans

Many of the Samaritans believed in Jesus because of the woman's testimony, but after spending two days with Him themselves, they told her that they believed in Him for themselves, not just from her testimony.
