Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to John 2:1-11, what town was Jesus in when he turned water into wine at a wedding?

Answer: Cana

In Jesus's first miracle, He turned six stone water jars filled with water into about 120 to 180 gallons of wine.
2. According to the NIV Bible, in John 11:43, what did Jesus say to bring Lazarus out of the tomb he was placed in after his death?

Answer: "Lazarus, come out!"

Jesus returned to Judea to "...wake him up", John 11:11. Lazarus was the brother of Martha and Mary, who poured perfume on Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair in John 12:3. It is not explained why these events do not seem to be in chronological order in the Bible.
3. In John 12:23-26, Jesus attempted to explain to the people around him why he must die, using what type of grain as an example?

Answer: kernel of wheat

Jesus explained how a grain of wheat, if left on a stalk, stays an individual seed, but if it is allowed to fall to the ground and "die", it will become many seeds.
4. Who was the high priest the year that Jesus was crucified?

Answer: Caiaphas

Caiaphas was the leader of a religious group called the Sadducees. He was opposed to any changes that would jeopardize his group's standing with the Romans. In John 11:49-50, he said "...You do not realize that it better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish."
5. In John 18:28, what political position did Pontius Pilate hold in the Roman government?

Answer: Governor

Pilate could not find any evidence against Jesus and he tried on several occasions to find a way to release Jesus. His efforts all failed. Although the local leaders decided that Jesus must die, they had no legal rights to do it themselves.
6. When Jesus was crucified, Pilate had a sign attached to the cross that read "Jesus of Nazareth, The King of the World".

Answer: False

The sign read "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews". The sign was written in three different languages so that all could read it. When asked by the chief priests to change the inscription "the King of the Jews", Pilate replied, "What I have written, I have written." (John 19:22)
7. According to John 19:31-36, when it appeared that Jesus had died, what did the Jews ask the Roman soldiers to do before they took down the bodies of Jesus and the other men?

Answer: have their legs broken

The means of death in a crucifixion was suffocation when a person could no longer hold up his body. The reason for breaking the legs was to keep them from holding themselves up.
8. In John 19:38-42, ________ of Arimathea and __________ were the two men who laid the crucified Jesus in the tomb.

Answer: Joseph and Nicodemus

Joseph was a disciple of Jesus and Nicodemus had visited Jesus secretly earlier. Because both of these men were members of the Jewish council, they had been secret followers of Him. Now, at Jesus's death, they finally came out of secrecy to lay the Lord in the tomb.
9. In John 21:1-14, Jesus appeared to some of the disciples when they were fishing. At what part of the boat did Jesus tell them to cast out their nets to find fish?

Answer: right side

This is the third time Jesus appeared before the disciples since His resurrection. They spent all night fishing without catching anything, until the Lord appeared and told them where to fish.
10. According to the New International Version of the Bible, John 1:12 says, "Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of _______...."

Answer: God

The Life Center Church takes this verse to support the belief that, "upon sincere repentance and a whole-hearted acceptance of Christ, we are justified before God through Jesus' sacrificial death" (Romans 10:6-10; 1 John 1:9) and that "salvation is wholly through grace; that no human righteousness or merit can contribute to our receiving God's love and favor" (Ephesians 2:8).
