Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The next day John saw Jesus ____ toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (1:29)

Answer: coming

This is presumed to be after Jesus was baptized by John and after his 40 days of temptation in the wilderness. John is pointing out Jesus to the crowd as one who should be followed. He doesn't describe him solely as a great teacher or wise leader, but as the God-sent sacrifice for all sin.

The phrase "Lamb of God" harks back to the substitutional sacrifice sent as Abraham was ready to offer up Isaac, and of the Passover lamb, and the temple offering.
2. When he saw Jesus ____ by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!" (1:36)

Answer: passing

Two disciples hear John point out Jesus as the Lamb of God and immediately start following him. This again points out that John the Baptist's role was to point the way, not to be the one disciples followed. The phrase "Lamb of God" foreshadows Jesus' future sacrifice on our behalf.
3. ____ around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" (1:38)

Answer: Turning

Jesus saw the two disciples following him after John had pointed him out as the Lamb of God - we later learn that one of these is Andrew, who then brings his brother Simon Peter to see the Messiah. The other disciple is not named, which some scholars have taken as an indication that it is John, who rarely names himself in this gospel.
4. "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they ____ and saw where he was staying and spent that day with him. (1:39)

Answer: went

Since Jesus says "come" to the two disciples, it seems reasonable to conclude that he also "went" to where he was staying to show them. The disciples stayed with him until the tenth hour, which is about 4 in the afternoon, 10 hours after sunrise.
5. Jesus ____ at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter.) (1:42)

Answer: looked

Both Peter and Cephas mean "rock," and in Matthew 16:18 we hear Jesus make a play on words with this name, telling Peter that "on this rock I will build my church." Of note, Jesus recognizes Peter without being introduced.
6. The next day Jesus ____ to leave for Galilee. (1:43)

Answer: decided

Galilee is the region around the Sea of Galilee, a lake in northern Israel. The text informs us that Philip, Andrew and Peter were from Bethsaida, a town along the shores of the Sea of Galilee.
7. ____ Philip, (1:43)

Answer: Finding

Philip most likely didn't realize he was missing! Philip is also from Bethsaida like Andrew and Peter - it means "house of nets," appropriate for the home of these fishermen. Right after being called by Jesus, Philip summons Nathanael, explaining that they had found the one Moses and the prophets had written about, Jesus of Nazareth. Philip is so excited by his encounter with Jesus that he wants to share. Nathanael spits out the ironic retort, "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" This may be because Jesus was actually born in Bethlehem, not Nazareth, and Bethlehem is where the prophets predicted the Messiah would arise and Nathanael doesn't want to blindly accept an enthusiastic entreaty. Or it might just be old-fashioned prejudice against people from another place.
8. He ____ to him, "Follow me" (1:43)

Answer: said

Jesus reaches out to Philip, who doesn't seem to have been looking for him. This is an example of "prevenient grace," a theological concept first proposed by Augustine of Hippo, that Jesus seeks after us even before we turn to him.
9. Jesus ____, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you." (1:48)

Answer: answered

When Nathanael approaches, Jesus calls him a "true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false." Nathanael, ever suspicious, asks how Jesus knows him. Jesus answers indicating that he had noticed him under a fig tree even before Philip had reached out to him to join the disciples. Nathanael is astonished that he had been noticed and recognized, and declares that Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus assures Nathanael that he will see things more astonishing than being recognized under a fig tree, indeed, he will see angels of God emerge from heaven.
10. He then ____, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." (1:51)

Answer: added

Jesus adds to Nathanael's understanding. Nathanael was impressed by Jesus' earthly action of recognition, but Jesus promises even deeper, heavenly experience is ahead for those who follow him. This is the final verse in this chapter and concludes John's recounting of the calling of the disciples.
