Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2004 it is illegal to drive barefoot in how many states in the US?

Answer: 0

It is not against the law to drive barefoot anywhere in the United States.
2. In the United States, which establishment is it illegal to enter barefoot?

Answer: none of these

It is not illegal to enter any of these places barefoot. In fact, it is not against *any* laws to enter *any* establishment barefoot. Some businesses make a company policy not to allow someone barefoot into their business, but that doesn't make it illegal.

It can *become* a legal issue if you are asked to leave because you are barefoot and you refuse to do so. Then you are trespassing. The health codes regarding bare feet only apply to employees, not patrons. No state in the US has a health department rule against patrons being barefoot.
3. In the United States, can OSHA prevent you from visiting a museum barefoot?

Answer: no

OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulates employees, not patrons.
4. Which of the following diseases can you catch if you go barefoot 100% of the time?

Answer: Hookworm

Athlete's foot only grows in a moist and sweaty environment. Bare feet are constantly exposed to fresh air, resulting in dry feet. Going barefoot is actually a cure for athlete's foot. AIDS and herpes are transmitted by intimate contact. Hookworm is carried in human and animal feces; you can only get it by eating something with that in it, or walking barefoot in raw feces.
5. You should not go barefoot if you have flat feet.

Answer: false

If you experience no pain when walking barefoot, then go for it! In fact, going barefoot actually improves your arch, and has cured many cases of flat feet.
6. In the United States, if you walk into a hardware store barefoot and step on a nail, is the hardware store liable?

Answer: no

This falls under personal liability. Basically that means that if you go barefoot, you are aware that you are taking the risk of stepping on something, and that you accept that risk and the responsibility for your safety in such situations. I have gone into many hardware stores barefoot, and have never stepped on a thing.
7. Bare feet are more likely to be unhealthy.

Answer: false

With all the people that handle money, doorknobs, telephones, keyboards, etc., hands are MUCH more of a health risk than feet.

Bare feet are less likely to have fallen arches, athlete's foot, bunions, plantar warts, corns, ingrown toenails, nail fungus, hammer toes, and a variety of other foot related problems.

The thing to remember is those are all actually shoe related problems, and going barefoot will improve and may cure them.

The concept of a bare foot being a stinky foot comes from people smelling their own feet after removing their shoes and socks at the end of the day. What they are smelling are all the bacteria that have been breeding and feeding off of their sweat, which is trapped in place by their sock and the leather of their shoe. Feet that stay bare all the time receive constant air circulation- just as your hands do, and there is no difference between the sweat glands on your feet and those on your hands. Due to the ventilation, bacteria does not have a chance to form and thus bare feet do not smell.

Since bacteria, fungus, yeast and other germs thrive in a dark, moist environment, bare feet are drier, have less odor and germs, and are all-around much cleaner and healthier than feet that are usually encased in shoes.
8. Which of the following words means barefoot in Danish?

Answer: barfodet

Barfot is Norwegian for barefoot, barfuss is barefoot in German, and paljasjalkainen is the Finnish word for barefoot.
9. Which of the following was a famous Florida persona?

Answer: The Barefoot Mailman

Ed Hamilton is known as the Barefoot Mailman of Florida. In the 1880s, he was the Postmaster in the Miami area. Due to the lack of good roads and rough seas, mail was delivered on foot. Ed made the trip many times before mysteriously disappearing along his route in October 1887.

While his personal effects and the mail he was carrying were found, his body was never recovered and his death remains a mystery to this day.
10. Is there such a thing as a barefoot group?

Answer: yes

The Society for Barefoot Living can be found at www.barefooters.org. At the time of writing this quiz they have over 930 members worldwide, yours truly being one of them.
