Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. CF is a genetic disorder and research requires duplicate genes, best achieved through cloning. Which famous instance of cloning had a link to CF research?

Answer: Dolly the sheep

Dolly was the first mammal cloned from a cell from an adult animal, her mother. Human genes that produce proteins used in treating CF and other diseases are transplanted into mammals through a laborious process. Being able to clone these genetically-altered mammals produces identical therapeutic genes with much less difficulty.
2. CF is a genetic disease caused when a person inherits a defective gene from each parent who are "carriers" of the disease, but don't have it. For each child of two carriers, what is the likelihood that the child will have CF?

Answer: 25%

Since the child must inherit the same defective gene from each parent, the possibilities for each pregnancy are: the child will inherit defective genes from both parents (25%) and have the disease; the child will inherit no defective genes (25% chance); the child will inherit a defective gene from one parent but not the other (50% chance) and become a carrier.
3. If you have a family history of CF, how can you find out if you are a carrier of the disease?

Answer: DNA test

DNA testing is the only way to detect if someone carries a CF gene if they themselves don't have the disease. Anyone with a relative with CF, or a family history of someone dying young from a lung or digestive order, should be tested. Carriers should ask their mates to be tested as well before deciding to have children.
4. The life expectancy of CF patients has increased dramatically, mainly due to effective treatment. Which of the following is NOT a usual treatment for CF?

Answer: Blood transfusions

CF produces a thick mucous that affects the lungs and digestive systems. Lung airway clearance and antibiotics clear out that mucous and treat lung infections; enzyme supplements replace those blocked by the mucous. Blood transfusions are not necessary for the treatment of CF.
5. Is CF contagious?

Answer: No

CF patients produce a lot of heavy mucous and can have a bad cough, making many think that they have a contagious disease. However, CF can be passed only genetically from parents to child. CF patients do have to take precautions around each other so as not to pass on specific strains of bacteria they may be growing in their lungs.
6. The drug Kalydeco (ivacaftor) was approved in the U.S. in 2012 for the treatment of some of the many mutations of CF. If it works, why would this be a major breakthrough?

Answer: First cure for a genetic disease

Kalydeco (ivacaftor) appears to be effective in certain mutations of the CF gene, correcting the underlying causes of the disease rather than just the symptoms. If it is proven to work, this will be the first-ever cure for a genetic disease.
7. A 19th-century Polish composer was originally thought to have died of tuberculosis, but recent thinking is that his symptoms more closely matched CF. Who is this composer?

Answer: Frédéric Chopin

Chopin was sickly from birth and died at the age of 39. Throughout his life he suffered repeated lung infections, was intolerant of fatty foods, was infertile and was underweight and under sized - all symptoms of untreated CF.
8. Patients with CF flourish in social media, which protects them from cross-contamination that is a chance in any face-to-face meeting. A male CFer is commonly referred to as "fibro"; what pet name refers to a female CFer?

Answer: Cyster

"Cyster" is used to refer to female suffers of many diseases with a form of "cystic" in the name, such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Various CF web sites, blogs and other social media show widespread use of "cyster" and "fibro" by 2009.
9. What color is the CF "awareness ribbon" - those colored loops that represent various support and awareness groups?

Answer: Purple

The purple awareness ribbon represents CF and 30 other causes, the largest number of causes represented by any ribbon color. Others that use the purple ribbon are LGBT hate crimes, epilepsy, child neglect and pagan pride.
10. In 1965, young Richard Weiss coined a phrase that many young CF sufferers use to name their disease, a phrase that is easier for them to pronounce. What is this phrase for cystic fibrosis?

Answer: 65 roses

"65 Roses" is a registered trademark of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The story of Richard Weiss was told by his mother Mary, who worked diligently calling potential donors seeking assistance to research and treat CF. Mary had three sons with the disease.
