Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease, but roughly how many people does it affect in the UK?

Answer: 7500

Before the 1930's, the life expectancy for a baby with CF was only a few months.
2. There are many symptoms of CF. Which of these is included?

Answer: Failure to gain weight

Unlike most people who like to lose weight, it's always good news for us if we have put on weight!
3. Is Cf life-threatening?

Answer: Yes

CF is the UK's most common life-threatening disease.
4. People with CF are worse at singing than people without CF, because their lungs are bad.

Answer: False

This is not true at all; in fact Alice Martineau, who sadly died of CF in 2003, was a wonderful singer.
5. When we are doing poorly, we often have to go to hospital and have IVs. What does this stand for?

Answer: Intra-Venous

Because we have to stay in hospital for a while, they put a tube into one of our veins which allows antibiotics to enter our body quickly.
6. Some people with CF also get diabetes.

Answer: True

In some older patients, insulin production can become very poor due to the deterioration in the pancreas. This means that some develop diabetes and their blood sugar levels are no longer controlled.
7. There are more men than woman with CF.

Answer: False

CF is inherited, so males and females have an equal chance of getting it.
8. Which of these food types are especially good for people with CF?

Answer: All of these

What a yummy diet! All these foods are good for people with CF, because they all help us keep our weight up, and we need the weight to keep healthy!
9. To find out if a person has CF, the hospital gives them a 'sweat test'. Why is this?

Answer: They have more salt in their sweat

People with CF have more salt in their sweat than normal, which is never nice when you get really sweaty and it gets in your eyes, because it stings!
10. Percussive therapy is one of the most important treatments for a person with CF. What does this involve?

Answer: Patting the chest, back and sides, while lying down

Physiotherapy is done to help loosen and get rid of the thick, sticky mucus from the lungs. You can also use a Pep mask, which creates the same effect. It is normally done for about 20 minutes (what fun in the morning!)
