Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Rose white, rose red, rose up in my head.' Roses come in many colours, but which of these rose colours does not occur in nature?

Answer: Blue

Although a strain of rose has been created using the blue pigment delphinidin, it is actually lilac in colour - in fact, most rose varieties described as blue are actually more in the purple tonal range. Blue roses are created by dyeing white roses with blue dye. They are said to represent mystery, royalty, and prosperity.

(Lyrics from 'I Think That I Would Die', from the album 'Live Through This'.)
2. 'And the sky was all violet, I wanna give the violet more violence.' What is NOT a distinguishing characteristic of the common violet, Viola odorata?

Answer: It grows in marshes

The common violet is more likely to be found at the edges of forests. Stolons, which it uses to spread, are horizontal stems that grow at the soil surface.

As well as smelling nice, the common violet is also used in cooking - its extract is used in a syrup to flavour sweets.

(Lyrics from 'Violet', from the album 'Live Through This'.)
3. 'All the lilies bloomed and blossomed, Wilted and they're shivering, I can't stop them withering.' Lilium candidum, pictured here, is one of the 'true lilies', a member of the genus Lilium. By which name is it also known?

Answer: Madonna lily

Not all flowers with 'lily' in their name are 'true' lilies - lilies-of-the-valley (Convallaria) and waterlilies (Nymphaeaceae), for instance. There are nine classifications of 'true' lily, and Lilium candidum, the Madonna lily, is in the candidum class, found in Europe. The Virgin Mary is often depicted holding them in Catholic tradition, as they are associated with purity - hence the name.

(Lyrics from 'Petals', from the album 'Celebrity Skin'.)
4. 'Praying to the wound that swallows all that's cold and cruel, Can you see the trees? Charity and gratitude. Run to the pines...' The Scots pine, pictured here, is a coniferous tree. The biome known as the taiga is made up of coniferous forests, and it is spread over several countries. In which country would you NOT find the taiga?

Answer: France

The taiga is the world's largest biome outside the oceans, a biome being a community of plants and animals which share common characteristics. France is a little too far south for the taiga! It covers northern European countries such as Sweden and Finland, parts of North America and Canada, and extends into Asia, into the north of Japan, Kazakhstan and Mongolia. What type of tree dominates depends where you are. The Eastern Siberian taiga is mainly larches, while the North American taiga is mainly spruces.

(Lyrics from 'Northern Star', from the album 'Celebrity Skin'.)
5. 'It's the bitter root, it's twisted inside, It's the heart you used to have when it died.' Pictured here is the ginger plant, known for its pungent taste. To what group of plants does it belong? (Think of roots.)

Answer: Rhizomatous plants

Rhizomatous plants are plants with stems known as 'rhizomes', which grow beneath the ground in a vertical direction, and send out roots and shoots. They also help to store nutrients for the plant, such as starches. The rhizome of the ginger plant is the part traditionally used in cooking and Chinese medicine. Ginger can be propagated by separating the rhizome and growing new plants from pieces of the parent plant.

(Lyrics from 'Use Once and Destroy', from the album 'Celebrity Skin'.)
6. 'Pay your money, baby, now's your chance. Eyes like cyanide.' True or false: cyanide can be found in apple pips.

Answer: True

Cyanide is produced by certain types of mould, fungi and bacteria, and can be found in a number of plants, including almonds (cyanide is sometimes said to taste like bitter almonds), cassava and lima beans. Apple seeds have a compound called amygdalin in them, which is made up of sugar and cyanide. The sugar part is destroyed when the pips are chewed and animal or human enzymes come into contact with amygdalin molecules, releasing hydrogen cyanide - but it's in such tiny amounts that accidentally eating an apple pip won't kill you!

(Lyrics from 'Dying', from the album 'Celebrity Skin'.)
7. 'Love hates you. I lived my life in ruins for you. And for all your secrets kept, I squashed the blossom, and the blossom's dead.' Which of these trees is LEAST likely to produce blossoms?

Answer: Oak

When it comes to blossoms on trees, they predominantly grow on fruit-bearing trees, specifically, stone fruit trees, such as plum, almond and pear trees. They aren't just for show - blossoms are important when it comes to cross-pollination, as they provide bees with pollen. Oaks, meanwhile, produce hanging flowers known as catkins.

(Lyrics from 'Reasons To Be Beautiful', from the album 'Celebrity Skin'.)
8. 'Swing low, sweet cherry, make it awful.' The Japanese cherry tree is known as 'sakura' in its native Japan, but can you tell me its Latin name?

Answer: Prunus serrulata

Known for its pink blossoms, the Japanese cherry tree is a deciduous tree which produces black fruit. Varieties cultivated in the Western hemisphere have been grafted onto the roots of the wild cherry, although this does not produce fruit.

Don't let the other names confuse you - Prunus nipponica is actually the Japanese alpine cherry. Prunus cerasus is the sour cherry tree, while Prunus pumila is the sand cherry.

(Lyrics from 'Awful', from the album 'Celebrity Skin'.)
9. 'I'm the demon buttercup!' There's a popular children's game which involves holding a buttercup up to someone's chin. If you see a yellow glow there, it means the person likes butter. However, are buttercups themselves actually edible?

Answer: No

Buttercups, small yellow flowers of the genus Ranunculus, might not be 'demons', but you certainly wouldn't want to eat one! They have an offputting acrid taste, which is just as well as they can be poisonous to both humans and animals, causing vomiting and diarrhoea, and their juice can cause blisters. When the cells of the plant are crushed, the ranunculin contained within becomes a toxic oil called protoanemonin.

(Lyrics from 'Phonebill Song', from the album 'My Body the Hand Grenade'.)
10. 'What was she for, Halloween? The ugliest girl you've ever seen, Someday she will die alone.' What vegetable of the genus Cucurbita is a popular choice for making Halloween lanterns in the US?

Answer: Pumpkin

The orange pumpkin we know and love is a variety of squash, official name Cucurbita pepo, variety pepo. When it comes to domesticated vegetables, pumpkins are one of the oldest - locations were pumpkins were cultivated in ancient times include Oaxaca in Mexico, around 8000-10,000 years ago. According to the British Royal Horticultural Society's website, they're best grown indoors from seed, though they can be sown outdoors too.

(Lyrics from 'Old Age', from the album 'My Body the Hand Grenade'.)
