Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What best describes status epilepticus?

Answer: Continuous seizure state

A continuous seizure state can occur in all seizure types and is ALWAYS an emergency. The most life threatening type is generalized tonic-clonic seizure without any return of consciousness.
2. This recurrent episodic condition is sometimes considered as a warning of an upcoming thrombotic CVA. The incidence rises sharply after the age of 50 and is highest among blacks and men.

Answer: Transient ischemic attack

The first person I saw with a TIA caused me to call a code (page a signal for all medical personnel to come). Ten minutes later the patient was awake and feeling better than me.
3. Huntington's Disease is a hereditary disease. Which of the following is NOT descriptive of the disease?

Answer: Respiratory distress at the onset

Huntington's chorea is caused by a degeneration in the cerebral cortex and the basal ganglia. It generally hits people between the ages of 25 and 55 and the average age is around 35. There isn't a known cure for Huntington's and it is a totally exhaustive disease both for the patient and the caregiver. Hallucinations, paranoid behavior and twitching (mild to violent) takes place, speech is unintelligible and bowel and bladder have no control. Death usually occurs 10 to 15 years after onset. A particularly horrid disease.
4. Tic Douloureux is a painful neuralgic disorder of a cranial nerve and it affects the face, scalp and teeth. Which cranial nerve is the culprit?

Answer: Trigeminal

The person having the bad misfortune of having this ailment has attacks of excruciating facial pain. It occurs in people over the age of 40 and hits about 25% more women than men. The cause is unknown, however, it may be related to the compression of a nerve root by a tumor.
5. Herberden's and Bouchard's nodes are signs of what disease?

Answer: Osteoarthritis

These nodes are usually hard and painless and generally appear on the sides and close to the end of the fingers. They contain bone and cartilage and typically occur in middle aged and elderly osteoarthritic people.
6. A positive Brudzinski's sign can indicate what disease?

Answer: Meningitis

The patient is placed in a recumbent position, the physician places his/her hands behind the patient's neck and bends it forward. If there is pain and resistance, it may indicate meningeal inflammation, neck injury or arthritis. But if the patient also flexes his knees and hips in response to the movement of the neck, chances are he has meningitis. Only a diagnostic tool.
7. About 50% of breast cancers develop in what quadrant of the breast?

Answer: Upper Outer

Only 6% develop in the lower inner quadrant. Sources say that 10% of women will be struck by breast cancer. It is more prevalent in those over 50 years of age. Don't forget to do your self examinations and when your physician tells you to make an appointment for a mammogram, don't put it off!
8. Raynaud's Disease is a condition that is characterized by:

Answer: Vasospasm

The person with Raynaud's responds to stress and cold by blanching of the skin caused by vasoconstriction. When the vasoconstriction eases off, a throbbing, burning and painful sensation occurs. This disease usually occurs bilaterally (both hands, both feet, etc.) and affects mainly the hands but it can affect the feet, earlobes and the tip of the nose.

It is 5 times more common in females than in males.
9. Brucellosis occurs mostly in what occupation?

Answer: Stock handlers

Brucellosis is also called undulant fever and is an acute illness that's transmitted from animals to humans. It occurs throughout the world but the incidence of brucellosis has greatly decreased in the USA. Recently, in California and Texas there have been cases caused by unpasteurized goat's milk and cheese from Mexico. With treatment, it's seldom fatal but it has a wicked bunch of complications.
10. Mallory-Weiss Syndrome is characterized by:

Answer: Mild to massive painless bleeding

Mallory-Weiss syndrome results from a tear in the mucosa of the cardia or lower esophagus. This tear is almost always longitudinal and it is caused by prolonged and forceful vomiting. It's most common in men over the age of 40 and particularly in alcholics. Hypovolemia may result if the bleeding is massive. Esophageal tearing can also be caused from straining in childbirth, seizures and gastritis.
