Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these organs can regenerate themselves?

Answer: The liver

This property allows a living person to donate part of their liver and recover.
2. Which of these is NOT an illness involving the immune system?

Answer: Sickle cell anaemia

Sickle cell anaemia is a hereditary illness. The other three are all caused by problems with the immune system. Patients with lupus and MS have overactive immune systems which attack their own bodies. Patients with AIDS have underactive immune systems and are vulnerable to infection.
3. What is the common name for this complaint: circumorbital haematoma?

Answer: Black eye

Haematoma simply means bruising. Circumorbital means "around the eye".
4. Which of the following illnesses is most common?

Answer: Lupus

Although less well known, lupus is an incurable autoimmune disease affecting more people than the other three illnesses combined.
5. Which part of the body is studied by an EMG?

Answer: Muscles

An EMG is an electromyogram. It measures the electrical activity in muscles. It can detect disorders such as polymyositis.
6. Which of the following illnesses might you have if you were referred to an endocrinologist?

Answer: Addison's disease

Endocrinologists deal with disorders of hormones and enzymes such as Addison's disease. Parkinson's disease affects the brain and would be treated by a neurologist. Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory illness usually treated by a rheumatologist. Nephritis is a kidney disease and would be treated by a nephrologist.
7. What telling feature do you have if you are polydactyl?

Answer: You have additional fingers or toes

Ann Boleyn, Henry the eighth's second wife was rumoured to have 6 fingers and so would have been polydactyl. She wore long sleeves to hide them as they were considered a sign of witchcraft.
8. Which of these illnesses might you have if you have a positive ANA?

Answer: Sjogren's Syndrome

ANA stands for Anti-Nuclear Antibodies. Their presence indicates an autoimmune process. However in itself it is not diagnostic since it can also be positive in some other autoimmune diseases, such as lupus, mixed connective tissue disease or scleroderma. It is not present in all autoimmune illnesses. For instance MS patients test negative for this antibody.
9. Which part of the body is affected by labyrinthitis?

Answer: The ears

Labyrinthitis is so named because it affects the twisting passages in the inner ear. It causes dizziness, nausea and tinnitus.
10. What type of medication is prednisolone?

Answer: A steroid

Prednisolone is a steroid which works by suppressing the immune system. Patients taking high doses and long courses of steroids must come off them slowly as their own body has stopped producing them. Examples of their use include treatment for some autoimmune diseases and severe asthma.
