Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Diamonds are the only gems that are made up entirely of a single element. Which element is the only ingredient of a diamond?

Answer: Carbon

Diamonds are the purest naturally occuring form of carbon. They consist of about 99.95% carbon. The remaining 0.05% is made up of trace elements - atoms that are not among diamonds' essential chemistry. Diamonds formed about 3billion years ago, deep inside the Earth, due to intense heat and pressure that caused carbon atoms to crystallize.

5. How do scientists determine what colors an animal can see?

Answer: By examining the cones in the eye

Since animals aren't willing to tell us what colors they see, scientists study animal eyes and look at various factors: The number of cones, what colors of light the cones can detect, and the location of the cones in the retina, for example. This information tells us what colors can be detected and possibly how strong or weak the color might appear, but much like humans who can see colors differently (remember that black and blue dress that some people saw as white and gold back in 2015?), we don't know how the colors look to animals.

6. One of the tallest cactus species, Pachycereus pringlei, is known in Mexico as "cardon", a name derived from the Spanish word for which other thorny plant and national emblem?

Answer: thistle

A native of the arid and semi-arid regions of northwestern Mexico, Pachycereus pringlei is known by the common names of Mexican giant cardón or elephant cactus. This huge succulent resembles its closest competitor for the title of tallest cactus species, the saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea), though its branches begin from the base of the stem - unlike the saguaro's distinctive "arms".

The cardón's trunk can reach a diameter of 1 m (3.3 ft); though the average height of this imposing plant is 10 m (30 ft), some mature specimens of up to 18 m (60 ft) are known. Cardón cacti have a symbiotic relationship with bacterial and fungal colonies that live on their roots, and enhance these plants' growth and lifespan, allowing them to flourish in the harshest of conditions.

The name "cardón" comes from the Spanish "cardo", meaning "thistle" (Scotland's national emblem).

7. Facebook was started by a college student and became a popular chat internet website for millions around the world. What object inspired the name and creation of the website?

Answer: a college photo directory

Facebook's name and creation was inspired by college campuses' photo directory albums. Dormitories and individual houses would compile a book of pictures for their tenants. While at Harvard University, Mark Zuckerberg took pictures of students from directories and compiled them for a website.

His first creation of "Facebook" was a site called "Facemash" which students compared which photo was the most popular. The website was a success, but the Harvard administration did not approve it, as they saw it as an invasion of privacy. Mark Zuckerberg later launched the site to the public as "Facebook" with the additional changes of comment boxes and user options.

10. In emergency cardiac medical treatment, what is LUCAS?

Answer: Automated compression system for CPR

Of the four choices, only one relates to cardiac care. The LUCAS chest compression system automatically performs chest compressions on patients needing CPR. This eliminates problems that have plagued CPR administration by humans -incorrectly performing compressions either by the wrong amount of pressure or the wrong rate - and also eliminates the risk that the person administering CPR will tire and be unable to continue.

The makers of LUCAS also point out that emergency medical personnel sometimes sustain injuries while performing compressions, so this enhances their on-the-job safety.
