Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hypoglycemia may be a symptom of what disease?

Answer: Addison's Disease

Other symptoms may include low blood pressure or darkening of the skin.
2. What is the condition called where infants continually have hypoglycemia because their pancreas is making far too much insulin?

Answer: nesidioblastosis

This is a rare genetic condition. A drug called diazoxide may be used. Surgery may also be required to remove part or even all of the pancreas.
3. Which person would have a greater chance of giving birth to a child who has hypoglycemia at birth?

Answer: A woman with uncontrolled diabetes

The fetus gets used to higher blood sugars in the mother before it is born and makes more insulin itself to compensate. Once it is born, it does not need the excess insulin. These children are called "infants of diabetic mothers." Typically, it's stabilized in the hospital with IV glucose.
4. What test is most accurate in diagnosing reactive hypoglycemia?

Answer: Glucose Tolerance Test

The glucose tolerance test is more accurate than the others dealing with blood sugar because reactive hypoglycemics experience blood sugar drops after eating carbohydrates. The glucose tolerance test would catch this type of drop while the others would not.

A drink containing about 75 grams of pure sugar (depending on your weight and age) is consumed after a 12 hour fast. Blood sugars are drawn fasting and every hour or more often for 5 or 6 hours. A quick drop with symptoms would show relative hypoglycemia, if it doesn't go below normal levels. If it does go below normal levels, reactive hypoglycemia can be diagnosed.

A low fasting level shows fasting hypoglycemia. Some doctors will diagnose someone if their post-drink levels go significantly below their fasting levels and they have symptoms.
5. Which size/age of dog is most likely to become hypoglycemic?

Answer: toy/ puppies

Yes, your pets can get it too! Puppies are always more prone to hypoglycemia than adult dogs, but especially in small breeds.
6. Which of the following is a slow released carbohydrate that can keep blood sugars stable for around eight hours?

Answer: uncooked corn starch

This is often used over night to prevent hypoglycemia. It can be found in things like the Extend Bar and Nite Bites. Sucrose is table sugar.
7. There are two common units used to measure blood sugar, mg/dl and mmol/l. Both are metric, so what's the difference?

Answer: mg/dl is divided by 18 to get the result in mmol/l

In the US, mg/dl is more common. A typical result would be written as 97 mg/dl, while mmol/l would include a decimal point, so it would be 5.4 mmol/l.
8. Around what time at night do some people test their blood sugar to make sure they are not hypoglycemic?

Answer: 1am-3am

This is most common in insulin dependent diabetics. Night time hypoglycemia is called nocturnal hypoglycemia. Symptoms may include nightmares or sweating (diaphoreses).
9. This is the index that lists the effect that different types of foods have on blood sugar.

Answer: Glycemic Index

Some people with reative hypoglycemia may use this when planning their meals to determine how a food will affect them. Foods with a lower number have a less dramatic, steadier effect on blood sugar levels. The other choices are made up.
10. Which hormone is responsible for many of the symptoms of hypoglycemia?

Answer: Epinephrine

Also called adrenalin, this is made in the body's attempt to restore blood glucose to normal and is responsible for symptoms like the sweating (diaphoresis) and the fast heart beat (tachycardia).
