Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the hormone that helps the blood sugar (glucose) move to the cells of the body?

Answer: Insulin

Some people have a resistance to the hormone that helps to absorb blood sugar, and thus they are susceptible to Type 2 diabetes. Why did this resistance evolve in humans? One theory holds that the resistance developed as a sort of "thrifty" gene, helping the body store energy for times when food was scarce. But in the modern world, food is readily available, so that genetic evolution leads a path toward diabetes.

Endorphins help us cope with pain or stress. Oestrogen is a female hormone that controls puberty. Aldosterin conserves sodium in the body.
2. In the United States, the annual cost in medical care and lost wages due to diabetes is hundreds of billions of dollars. That includes billions of dollars in indirect costs in the workplace. Which of these is NOT considered an indirect cost?

Answer: decreased absenteeism

Increased absenteeism, not decreased absenteeism adds to the annual costs. Reduced productivity while at work accounts for 8%. The inability to work because of disease-related disability costs 11% of that total, and lost productivity due to premature deaths is a huge cost to the economy. Costs have doubled from what they were just ten years prior in 2007. People who have been diagnosed with diabetes have medical expenditures 2 to 3 times higher on average, than those without diabetes. One our of four health care dollars in the U.S. is devoted to a person with diabetes.
3. People with diabetes have 4 times the likelihood of getting heart disease. All of these additional statements about diabetes are also true EXCEPT for one. Which of these statements about diabetes is FALSE?

Answer: Women are twice as likely as men to develop Type 2 diabetes.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), men are actually more prone to a diabetes diagnosis than women. Glasgow University researchers discovered that men developed diabetes at a lower Body Mass Index (BMI) than women. They theorize that the distribution of body fat is important, which is why we hear that paying attention to our belt size is more important than focusing on our weight, which we've been used to doing for so long.

More than women, men tend to store their body fat in their liver and around the waist.
4. Which of these type-2 diabetes assertions is false?

Answer: You must avoid sweets

It sounds like a broken record I know, but "Everything in moderation" applies here as well. While you do need to watch your weight, you can absolutely have the occasional dessert--just be sure to have an overall healthy meal plan.

Type-2 diabetes is in the top ten causes of death in the United States. Type-2 diabetes causes insulin resistance in a person. Insulin, if not responded to correctly by the body, causes sugar to accumulate in the blood.
5. Which age group in America has the highest prevalence of type 2 diabetes?

Answer: Americans 65 and over

What is the ratio of Americans age 65 and older, who have diabetes? Around a quarter of Americans 65 and over have it. Generally, type 2 diabetes affects people over the age of 40. There is, unfortunately, a tendency for diabetes to be more prevalent in the elderly. According to diabetes.org About 26.8% of Americans over 65 have diabetes whether formally diagnosed, or not officially diagnosed yet.

The CDC reports that one and a half million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed every year in the U.S.

The Alzheimer Society of Canada reports that recent studies have found a link between Type 2 diabetes and a higher risk of dementia.
6. Insulin injections are a well known medication that helps control diabetes managing sugar levels. Which of the following is NOT also a medication that helps fight diabetes?

Answer: Atorvastatins

Statins such as atorvastatins and the like are used to help control levels of cholesterol. Statins may have dangerous effects on people with diabetes because the blood sugar levels may increase, which may lead to type 2 diabetes.

DPP-4 inhibitors are used to help reduce blood sugar levels, and have fewer side effects.

SGLT2 Inhibitors control how much glucose is absorbed by the kidneys.

Sulphonylureas are prescribed to help the body produce more insulin.
We should bear in mind tha t there is no drug that can cure diabetes, and the best initial steps people should adopt are a healthy diet and exercise.
7. What is another term for impaired glucose tolerance?

Answer: prediabetes

Prediabetes is also called "impaired glucose tolerance (IGT)" or also "impaired fasting glucose (IFG)". Prediabetes is when someone's blood sugar level is high but not so high to be regarded as type-2; one can take action to improve their prediabetes through diet and exercise, but it left untreated it will probably become type 2 within 10 years. People who have type 1 diabetes do not produce insulin in their bodies.

In type 2 diabetes, people don't respond as efficiently to the insulin in their bodies as they should. Type 2 is a milder type of diabetes than type 1 but still requires attention. Prediabetic cases are by far the most common. "Diabetes mellitus" is another term for type-2 diabetes, also referred to by the term "adult-onset diabetes."
8. Doctors use four basic different types of tests to diagnose for type 2 diabetes. The A1C test, the RPG test, The OGTT test and the FPG test. What does the F is the FPG test stand for?

Answer: fasting

The FPG stands for "fasting" in the "fasting plasma glucose" test, which examines blood after you have fasted for at least eight hours.

The A1C test, uses a drop of blood from a fingerstick to measure average
blood glucose over 2-3 months.

The RPG test (random plasma glucose), uses blood from a fingerstick at the moment the test is performed.

The OGTT test (oral glucose tolerance test) is two blood tests that compare a reading before you drink a sugary drink, and then a reading two hours later.
9. Which of the following should be avoided while the rest are a great source of foods to stave off type 2 diabetes?

Answer: Processed foods

The high sugar amounts in processed foods are likely to be a cause of insulin resistance, leading to a diabetic condition. Processed foods are processed for reasons that add to their convenience such as increased shelf life, or added vitamin content, or to kill bacteria, but they are high in trans fats which are unhealthy.

They also have too much sodium, sugar, artificial flavors and colors which have all those chemicals. In addition to avoiding processed foods, one should also take exercise.
10. Stress levels are harmful in that they can contribute to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Which of the following are two stress hormones?

Answer: Cortisol and norepinephrine

It's important to lower your stress levels. It can add to the ill effects of diets that are high in sugar and fat. It can cause people to pile on the abdominal fat increasing their risk of insulin resistance. Stress hormones attach to muscle and fat cells, and change the way they respond. Exercise can help reduce stress! How does exercise help? Aerobic exercises cause your skeletal muscles to contract and to use one of your body's key fuels---the circulating glucose. Muscles train themselves to become better users of insulin, and better at converting glucose into energy. Along with exercise a lower calorie diet can help.
