Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following statements about insomnia is true?

Answer: It affects a larger percentage of women than it does men.

Insomnia is not defined by the amount of hours that an individual sleeps because everyone is different and requires a different amount of sleep. People with insomnia can also have narcolepsy, sleep apnea, and restless legs syndrome.

However, insomnia affects about 40% of women and 30% of men. I guess I am in that 30%!
2. If a person is having sleep problems that are not directly associated with a health problem or condition, then what kind of insomnia do they most likely have?

Answer: Primary Insomnia

This can definitely occur and many times can be cured with a mind over matter attitude. I made up the term "No-Fault" Insomnia.

Secondary Insomnia is due to a health condition such as depression, cancer, arthritis, or even alcohol abuse.
You can find more on this topic on this web page: http://www.4woman.gov/faq/insomnia.htm
3. Un-refreshing sleep is considered a form of insomnia.

Answer: True

Insomnia is the perception or complaint of the inadequacy or
poor quality of sleep for whatever reason. If your sleep is un-refreshing, such as being in a drug-induced coma or simply tossing and turning, than you could be diagnosed as an insomniac.
4. According to statistics, at what age does insomnia begin to occur more frequently in people?

Answer: 60

Advancing age in general causes more and more insomnia and when individuals reach the age of 60 and beyond, people experience it more frequently.
5. Which one of these actions is NOT correlated with insomnia?

Answer: Only sleeping five hours a night.

Insomnia is not correlated at all with the amount of hours one sleeps. There are many people that can function perfectly on five hours of sleep. However, whether or not they are well-rested from those five hours is a different story.

The other three reasons are all valid, especially worrying about it. Your mind can play many tricks on you and keep you awake when you want to fall asleep.
6. Insomnia that only lasts a few days that is caused by jet lag is called what?

Answer: Both of These

A person with transient or intermittent insomnia only has episodes for a few days at a time. Most people do not require treatment if they experience this. Jet lag is only one example of what causes these kinds of insomnia.
7. Which of the following things would a doctor probably do first in order to treat chronic insomnia?

Answer: Diagnose the underlying problem

Treating patients with any kind of substance that is used to combat insomnia is controversial between doctors, pharmacists, and psychiatrists. Over-the-counter remedies are usually band-aid solutions that provide temporary relief. Sleeping pills such as Ambien (zolpidem tartrate) can become addictive. Hypnosis can be an effective treatment but is not usually the first thing tried out of the box.
If insomnia is chronic (occurs consistently) then it is usually best to discuss your problems with a therapist of some kind, as there is a good chance that there are deeper problems that are causing your insomnia.
8. In the USA, what does NCSDR stand for?

Answer: National Center on Sleep Disorders Research

This is one of the main places that insomnia is studied and treated. The center was set up in 1993 as part of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
9. Which of the following techniques are NOT considered successful ways to combat insomnia?

Answer: Not eating before bedtime

There are several techniques that can be used in order to combat insomnia and whether or not they are successful differs from person to person. However, studies have shown that eating before bedtime will help people fall asleep faster.
Drinking warm milk is considered an old wives' tale but it is as effective as drinking herbal tea. Wiggling your toes and then relaxing your feet and subsequently relaxing each body part until your head is a terrific technique to fall asleep. Of course, the first thing that you should do if insomnia becomes a problem for you is to see your doctor.
10. Counting sheep jumping over a fence is considered a successful way to fight insomnia.

Answer: False

Counting sheep in order to fall asleep is an urban legend or an old wives' tale. It is best to concentrate on something peaceful or inactive. Visualizing bouncy sheep jumping over a wall will stimulate the mind more than visualizing sheep sleeping in a meadow.
