Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What parts of the body does Multiple Sclerosis directly attack?

Answer: All of these

Together these tissues make up the Central Nervous System which is where MS does its damage. This may cause symptoms in other parts of the body (e.g. tingling or numbness in the toes or fingers) but the cause of these sensations/dysfunctions is in the CNS.
2. About twice as many women as men suffer from Multiple Sclerosis worldwide.

Answer: True

Medical science has yet to provide an adequate and accepted explanation for this gender-based disparity.
3. While it is not settled that MS is an auto-immune disorder, in people with MS the focus of the body's own immunity system's attack on itself is the myelin. What is myelin?

Answer: a fatty substance that surrounds and protects nerves

Myelin functions much like the rubber or plastic insulation around an electrical wire; damage to it reduces the ability of the nerve to transmit accurate messages.
4. The name of the disease -- Multiple Sclerosis -- derives from the medical term sclerosis. In this context, what does this term mean?

Answer: scar, lesion, a hardening or thickening

A sclerosis (in this context) is a portion of the myelin which has been inflamed by an immunity-based attack, leaving a scar which negatively impacts neural transmission. This is not to be confused with the sclera which is the outer white covering of the eyeball.
5. Physicians attempting to diagnose what may be Multiple Sclerosis will often order a spinal tap and analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid. Do the results of such testing provide a definitive conclusive diagnosis of MS?

Answer: No. Testing of the spinal fluid is only one of several tests which may lead to a diagnosis with certainty.

Oligoclonal bands, indicative of the production of immunoglobulins, appear in the cerebrospinal fluid of about 80-90% of all patients with Multiple Sclerosis. Lumbar puncture to obtain a sample of cerebrospinal fluid is often one test used in conjunction with several others, especially an MRI, in reaching a diagnosis.
6. Around the world, MS occurs more frequently in the Northern Hemisphere, especially in latitudes farther from the equator.

Answer: True

MS grows less common the closer one lives to the Equator. There is, as yet, no scientifically accepted explanation for this odd geographic distribution.
7. Is Multiple Sclerosis directly inherited genetically?

Answer: No, but there is an increased risk for those with MS in their families.

While MS is not inherited directly, there is an increase in the likelihood of contacting the disease in those with MS in their families. The risk in the general population is about 1:750; the risk in those with MS in their families is about 1:40.
8. Are all cases of Multiple Sclerosis alike?

Answer: No. There are four types or patterns of Multiple Sclerosis which are diagnostically significant.

The four types or patterns of multiple sclerosis are Relapsing-Remitting (RRMS), Primary Progressive (PPMS), Secondary-Progressive (SPMS) and Progressive-Relapsing (PRMS). About 85% of initial diagnoses of MS are of the RRMS type. Half or more of these will develop SPMS in the later course of the disease.
9. Which former Mouseketeer announced to the public in 1992 that he/she had Multiple Sclerosis, raising public awareness about the disease until his/her death in 2013?

Answer: Annette Funicello

Annette Funicello's disease was particularly debilitating, putting her into a wheelchair and taking from her even the ability to speak. Numerous contributions to MS research were made in her name by those who remembered her from the Mickey Mouse club and from her beach movies with Frankie Avalon.
10. Which of the following has been identified and validated as an independent risk factor for MS?

Answer: Smoking

Numerous proposed risk factors have been and are being investigated in connection with developing multiple sclerosis. Considerable work is being done in the area of diet but progress is slow and the results, thus far, disappointing.
