Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which cavity starts the GI system?

Answer: Oral

As obvious as it is, many people forget the mouth being part of the GI system.
2. Wavelike motions that propel food through the GI system are called what?

Answer: Peristalsis

While peristalis is a contraction, not all GI contractions are wavelike motions. Segmentation breaks up food. I made up the word oropharynxis. Did you know that peristalsis produces sounds that can be heard through a stethoscope?
3. Which of the following glands are salivary glands?

Answer: Both of these

The parotid glands are the largest salivary glands. The submandibular glands are located in the floor of the mouth. Other major salivary glands include the sublingual glands (under the tongue).
4. Cirrhosis of the liver can lead to which problem in the esophagus?

Answer: Varices

Esophageal varices occur when low-pressure veins become distended because of high pressure when the liver isn't processing nutrients efficiently.
5. When entering the stomach, what part does food pass by first?

Answer: Cardiac region

The cardiac region is toward the top of the stomach. The body is in the middle. The phyloric sphincter seperates the stomach from the duodenum, which is part of the small intestine.
6. What nutrient does amylase work on?

Answer: Carbohydrates

Amylase is present in saliva, which does little carb digestion. Most carb digestion is done in the small intestine by the pancreatic enzyme amylase.
7. Which organ is mainly used for storage?

Answer: Gallbladder

The gallbladder is used to store bile, which the liver produces. The bile empties into the duodenum of the small intestine to help fat digestion.
8. The large intestine, or colon, has various parts. Which of these is NOT one of them

Answer: Ileum

The colon starts with the cecum, then the ascending, transverse, descending and sigmoid. The ileum is part of the small intestine.
9. Name one of the five gases that account for 99 percent of intestinal gas.

Answer: nitrogen

Most gas is nitrogen and oxygen. Bacterial fermentation of undigested food results in methane, carbon dioxide and hydrogen.
10. Which term below refers to gallbladder stones?

Answer: Cholelithiasis

Achlorhydria is a lack of hydrochloric acid secretion in the stomach. Dysentary is an intestinal infection. Dysphagia is difficulty in swallowing.
