Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Orthopedic medicine, also called orthopedics, is surgery pertaining to what part of the human body?

Answer: Musculoskeletal System

There are many types of injuries under this heading. There are muscular trauma, skeletal trauma, sports injuries, tumors and degenerative diseases. There are two common spellings of this type of medicine: orthopedic and the original spelling of orthopaedic.
2. Since this sesamoid bone has its own tendon and ligament structure, breaking it normally needs surgical repair. Which of these fits this description?

Answer: Kneecap

A broken kneecap occurs when the small round bone (patella) that sits over the front of your knee joint breaks. Often with the breaking of the patella, the patellar or quadriceps tendon can also tear. These muscles connect the kneecap to the large bones of the leg. Surgery to repair the tear is very common, as is surgery to realign the kneecap.

The replacement of the patella, if it is shattered, is a much more involved surgery.
3. This part of your body can be injured easily. There are three small bones in each of these known as distal, middle, and proximal. If surgery is required for this injury, it isn't a simple one. What am I referring to?

Answer: Fingers

The bones of the fingers are called phalanges (plural) or phalanx (singular). It isn't easy to heal broken fingers as they can't usually be put in a cast; they can only be immobilized with a splint and heal in a few weeks. If surgery is done, you need to be sure you see the best possible surgeon as your hand can be stiff or not work properly if its not done well.
4. In the Middle Ages, what were bandages soaked in on the battlefield, to create a splint for broken bones?

Answer: Horse blood

This was one of the early forms of orthopedic medicine. This was an unsanitary method of treatment but the horse blood dried to a stiff splint until the wound could be properly assessed.
5. There is one type of orthopedic surgery most common in older adults. Do you know what is more easily broken in older people than younger people?

Answer: Hip

As humans age, their bones become more brittle. They can be more easily broken. Older people can become less steady on their feet and they can fall. When a younger person falls, they usually land on hands and knees. When an older person falls, they are much more likely to land on a hip; and with brittle bones, the hip can break.

There are several types of surgery styles for the repair of a broken hip but replacement has become the option of choice in most countries. The modern total hip replacement was pioneered by Sir John Charnley.
6. What type of orthopedic surgery for joints was pioneered in the early 1950's by Dr. Masaki Watanabe of Japan?

Answer: Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive form of surgery, involving a small incision to insert an arthroscope (a type of endoscope) into the joint. It involves less surgical time, less healing time and less risk of infection. This became the most popular and widely used form of surgery for knee and shoulder surgeries in the latter part of the twentieth century.

The endoscope has gone through many incarnations since it was first developed by Georg Wolf in 1906. The Endoscope began as a rigid appliance and has since evolved to flexible and fiber optic.
7. There are a few names for this type of orthopedic surgery including SLAP repair, acromioplasty, and Bankart. Which part of the body is being repaired?

Answer: Shoulder

There are several different kinds of shoulder surgery. Most of them are in regard to the rotator cuff. This is a group of tendons and ligaments that can become torn or stretched. This type of corrective surgery is usually done arthroscopically and if done correctly, needs only physical therapy to regain a normal range of motion.
8. When a finger or toe is broken, there is a method to aid in the healing if surgery isn't an option. The name of this method makes sense if you think about it since fingers and toes rarely travel alone. What is the name of this splinting method?

Answer: Buddy wrapping

Buddy wrapping is also called buddy taping. The broken or injured toe or finger is taped to the digit next to it for stability. They are wrapped with tape, separated by cotton so as not to injure the skin, and kept immobile until healed.
9. In the 1700's, orthopedic surgery was mostly used on what segment of the population?

Answer: Children

Orthopedic surgery was developed in France, with the name derived from the Greek words orthos ("correct", "straight") and paidion ("child"). In France, the earliest orthopedic surgery was used to correct deformities in children with Nicholas André, a French professor at the University of Paris, writing a textbook about his methods in 1741.
10. Sometimes, after surgery, or as an alternative, non-surgical methods using weights and pulleys may be used. It might look like medieval torture, and frankly that is the origin of some of these methods, known by which name?

Answer: Traction

There are two types of traction: skin traction and skeletal traction. These non-surgical methods are used to relieve pressure on the spine and straighten broken bones. Most of the early methods of traction have been upgraded since early times. In early times, just hanging a person upside down would be used for many different types of illnesses and injuries.

But even in today's world, a crown of screws is still used to keep the neck immobile after surgery. And hanging upside down has resurfaced as a popular method of stretching the spine and aiding in back pain.
