Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following statements is true of autoimmune diseases?

Answer: A patient's own immune system attacks his/her body

The human body consists of four types of tissue: muscle, nervous, epithelial and connective. Simply put, in patients with autoimmune diseases the patient's own immune system can't distinguish between its own healthy tissue and foreign tissue and, as a result, the immune system attacks itself.
2. Which of these is a type of connective tissue?

Answer: bone

Hair contains connective tissue but it is not in itself connective tissue. Enamel is the hard tissue found in the outer covering of our teeth and pulp (the center of the tooth) contains connective tissue. And of course bodily organs contain tissue. Bone is a hard, dense connective tissue.
3. Scleroderma involves an overproduction of which abundant protein, essential to skin structure?

Answer: collagen

Clearly a case of "too much of a good thing", with scleroderma the balance of collagen formation and breakdown is altered so that too much collagen builds up. Collagen makes up an astounding one third of our bodies' proteins. It's the basic component of scar tissue and an abnormal accumulation is called fibrosis.
4. Scleroderma is divided into how many main classifications?

Answer: 2

Localized scleroderma affects the skin and related tissues and can also affect muscles but internal organs are unaffected. The second type, systemic sclerosis (SSc), not only affects the skin but also blood vessels and major organs.
5. Localized scleroderma can be broken down to two subcategories. Reddish, oval-shaped hardened patches of skin are found in the type known as morphea. A distinctive single line or band of thickened, abnormally colored skin typically characterizes which type?

Answer: linear

The line usually runs down one side of the body on the arm and/or leg and can also be found on the forehead. It most commonly occurs in childhood.
6. Systemic sclerosis is broken down into two main types: diffuse cutaneous and limited cutaneous. The distinction between the two can indicate the degree of internal _____ involvement.

Answer: organ

Limited scleroderma usually has a gradual onset and is restricted to certain areas. Diffuse scleroderma has a much more sudden onset. Thick skin develops quickly and can cover much of the body and is typically symmetrical. Additionally, major organs can become damaged.
7. Systemic sclerosis (SSc) can sometimes be exhibited in symptoms known by the acronym CREST (syndrome), meaning calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal dysfunction, sclerodactyly and telangiectasias. Which one of the following is mismatched with its symptoms?

Answer: Sclerodactyly-calcium deposits in the connective tissue

Although it may sound like something found in "Jurassic Park", sclerodactyly is actually thickening and tightening of the skin on the fingers because of excess deposits of collagen within the layers. Calcinosis is formation of calcium deposits in the connective tissue.
8. Patients diagnosed with diffuse scleroderma are at a greater risk of developing scar tissue in their lungs. What is this called?

Answer: Pulmonary fibrosis

The buildup of collagen thickens lung tissue and causes scarring (fibrosis) which inhibits the oxygen from entering the bloodstream. Further complications of pulmonary fibrosis can include pulmonary hypertension and blood clots in the lungs.
9. In some cases scleroderma is also considered a rheumatic disease.

Answer: True

Rheumatic diseases are usually characterized by inflammation and pain in muscles, joints or any other fibrous tissue. A cross connection between the two types of diseases is found in some patients.
10. The treatment of scleroderma can include immunosuppressant drugs which, as the name implies, reduce or suppress a patient's immune system response. Which of the following is a "downside" to their use?

Answer: They do not target a specific part of the immune response

Rather than suppress the immune system where it is needed they kill immune cells or prevent the production of new immune cells. Some immunosuppressants drugs may be effective in the early stages of the disease, but their benefit is reduced after years of use in treatment.
