Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The cells in the outer layer of the skin are reinforced with a tough, impermeable protein. What is the name of this protein?

Answer: keratin

New cells are continuously being produced in the epidermis. These cells die and become keratinised. Eventually, they are worn away at the skin surface. Most household dust is composed of dead skin cells that have been shed in this way.
2. The skin has pores. What is the main function of these pores?

Answer: release of sweat and sebum

We do not "breathe" through our skin. The sweat glands secrete sweat onto the surface of the skin, and the evaporation of this sweat can cool us down.
3. There are individual differences between people's skin colour, mainly due to different amounts of the pigment melanin. What is the function of melanin?

Answer: to absorb harmful UV radiation

Cells at the base of the epidermis produce melanin, which absorbs ultra-violet radiation that would otherwise damage the delicate tissues underneath. A suntan consists of extra melanin - produced in response to exposure to these UV rays.
4. When someone gets hot, their skin (unless darkly pigmented) can often be seen to get pinker. What causes this?

Answer: dilation of superficial arterioles

The superficial arterioles dilate, allowing more blood to flow through the capillaries near the skin surface.
5. The skin is a large organ in the body. But which of these organs is larger than the skin?

Answer: none of these

The skin is the largest organ of the body, with a total surface area of around 17,000 square centimetres.
6. What is the name of the skin receptors that are sensitive to gentle touch?

Answer: Meissner's corpuscles

Pacinian corpuscles respond only to deeper pressure. The hairs themselves are not sensitive, but the movement of a hair will stimulate a sensory receptor in the skin. Sensory neurones carry nerve impulses from the skin receptors to the central nervous system.
7. Which glands secrete the grease that you need to wash off when you wash your hair?

Answer: sebaceous glands

The sebaceous glands secrete oil that helps to waterproof the skin.
8. We sweat when we are hot. What is the main way in which sweat helps to cool us down?

Answer: Sweat takes away latent heat when it evaporates.

The reason that heat is harder to bear on a humid day is because this makes it harder for the sweat to evaporate.
9. Starting from the outside (the surface of the body), what is the correct order of the layers of the epidermis of the skin?

Answer: cornified layer, granular layer, Malpighian layer.

Cells in the Malpighian layer are always dividing, and replacing (from below) the cells that are worn away at the surface. As the cells age, they become granular, and then cornified (reinforced with tough protein).
10. Which of these is NOT an important function of the skin?

Answer: removal of excess water

The kidneys regulate the body's water content. Water loss from the skin is for temperature control.
