Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is not a function of the skin?

Answer: Producing bile

Your skin does not produce bile, which aids in digestion. Instead, the largest internal organ, the liver, does that. However, the skin does maintain internal body temperature. It does this by working with blood vessels to move heat throughout your body.

The skin produces Vitamin D when it absorbs sunlight. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, which helps your bones. Finally, the skin eliminates waste from your body when it perspires or sweats.
2. What is the name for the area of fibrous skin tissue that often forms after an injury to the skin?

Answer: Scar

After an injury, the skin may not be able to regrow as it was originally. There may be replacement tissues known as scar tissue. These tissues are made of fiber. The scar tissue is different from normal skin, however, as hair follicles and pores sometimes do not come back after an injury.

The scars are also less resistant to ultraviolet rays from the sun, which can hurt the skin. Scars are a natural healing process in life.
3. What is the outer layer of your skin called?

Answer: Epidermis

The epidermis is the part of the skin which you can see. The epidermis you see is usually dead. After a while, the skin sheds and a new layer replaces it.
4. Your skin produces a pigment that gives skin its color. What is it called?

Answer: Melanin

Melanin is a pigment or colored substance. It gives skin its color. The more melanin you have, the darker your skin is. If you expose your skin to sunlight, it stimulates the skin to make more of the melanin. Melanin also helps to protect the skin from burning. Thus, if you have darker skin, your chances of getting sunburned would be less likely than if you had light skin.
5. Directly under the top layer of your skin is another layer. What is this layer called?

Answer: Dermis

The dermis is located under the epidermis. The only time you can see your dermis is if you scrape your skin hard enough for it to break. The dermis is located above a layer of fat. This part of your skin contains many nerves and blood vessels. It also includes sweat glands, hairs, and oil glands.
6. What are the openings in your skin which allow sweat to leave the body?

Answer: Pores

Pores are located all over your body. They look like little holes. Pores are located all over your body including the armpits, neck, hands, feet, and many others.
7. What are the structures in which hair grows?

Answer: Follicles

Hair follicles are not visible as they are inside your skin. The hair that comes out of your body is, in reality, emerging from the follicles.
8. Which one of these can result in eventual skin cancer?

Answer: Prolonged sun exposure

Prolonged sun exposure causes skin cancer. This is because the ultraviolet rays of the sun cause skin damage and mutate skin cells. The mutated skin cells divide quickly and uncontrollably. This causes skin cancer. There are different types of skin cancer, the deadliest being melanoma.
9. Which of these is a doctor that specializes in the skin?

Answer: Dermatologist

Dermatology is the study of skin, nails, and hair. The word dermatology comes from the Greeks words "derma" (skin) and "ology"(study).
10. What is the disorder that makes people appear really light-skinned as a result of a missing pigment?

Answer: Albinism

Albinism is a disease in which the skin lacks melanin. Therefore, there is barely any color and the people who suffer from it look pale. Albinism doesn't take place in only humans - some animals suffer from it, too. People with albinism look extremely pale and white. Not only the skin is affected, but hair is too. People with albinism either have extremely white hair or no hair at all.
