Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following fats is unsaturated?

Answer: Oleic acid

Did you ever wonder why butter, ghee and other animal fats are solid at room temperature? It is because they contain saturated fats(fats with only single bonds between carbon atoms). Butyric acid, Octanoic acid and Stearic acid are actually saturated fats found in butter, coconut oil and meat, respectively. Vegetable oils(Plant fats) like groundnut oil contain unsaturated fats(fats with double or triple bonds).

It is due to this that they are liquid at room temperature. Unsaturated Fats lower the cholestrol level.
2. The conversion of unsaturated fats into saturated fats by addition of hydrogen is a by-product of which process?

Answer: Hydrogenation

Groundnut oil contains lot of unsaturated fats that are essential for our body. By hydrogenation, traders turn those fats into saturated fats. Ghee is adulterated with the product so obtained(called 'vanaspati').
3. 'Iodized' salts contain the iodine salts of which metal?

Answer: Potassium

Iodine deficiency causes the thyroid gland in the neck to swell. The condition is called 'goitre'. Potassium iodate or iodide is therefore added to the common salt that we use in our homes.
4. Iron is important for the production of a protein called _____.

Answer: Haemoglobin

Haemoglobin is the red pigment present in the RBCs which give blood its red colour. It is important for transportation of oxygen to the tissues. Without iron, haemoglobin production is drastically reduced. This makes the person pale. Such a condition is called 'Anaemia'.
5. Tocopherol is the chemical name of which vitamin?

Answer: Vitamin E

Vitamin E is important for the production of gametes, normal functioning of muscles and protection of liver. Best sources include green leafy vegetables, milk and tomatoes.
6. Rabies is caused by which infectious agent?

Answer: virus

An infected dog's saliva carries this virus. Anti-Rabies injections are available. Pet dogs should be vaccinated against this disease.
7. Name the protozoan that causes malaria.

Answer: Plasmodium

Mosquito is not a protozoan, it is the carrier(host organism that transmits a pathogen to another host) of the malarial parasite.
8. Sodium Benzoate is not a chemical food preservative. (true or false)

Answer: False

Sodium Benzoate(C6H5COONa) retards bacterial growth. It is used to preserve food drinks like fruit juice and squash.
9. What is Pellagra?

Answer: A deficiency disease

Pellagra is caused by the deficiency of Vitamin B3 (Niacin). Symptoms of pellagra include skin eczema, diarrhea, mental disturbances etc. It is more common among people who live mainly on a maize diet. Best sources of Niacin are groundnuts, lean meat, liver, milk, fish and green vegetables.
10. What is the expanded form of DDT?

Answer: Dichloro Diphenyl Trichloroethane

Don't tell me you do not know about DDT! Very famous(or rather infamous!) chemical.
