Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where were the first T-Rex fossils found?

Answer: North America

The first T-Rex fossils were a partial skeleton found by Barnam Brown in Wyoming in 1900, and then in Montana in 1902.
2. What does the name Tyrannosaurus Rex mean?

Answer: Tyrant Lizard King

"Tyranno" is the Latin word for 'Tyrant', "Saurus" is the Greek word for 'Lizard' and "Rex" is the Latin word for 'King'.

Deinonychus means "Terrible Claw", Baryonyx means "Heavy Claw" and Giganotosaurus means "Giant Southern Lizard".
3. There are four geological eras in the Earth's history. Which one did T-Rex live in?

Answer: Mesozoic

T-Rex lived during the Late Cretaceous Period at the end of the Mesozoic Era. The first signs of complex life did not appear until the middle of the Early Paleozoic Era, about 600 million years ago. The Cenozoic is, of course, the era that we are currently living in.
4. The largest and most complete T-Rex skeleton discovered is known by what nickname?

Answer: Sue

Discovered in South Dakota, USA, on August 12th, 1990, "Sue" was named after Sue Hendrickson, the palaeontologist who found the fossil. Scientists believe "Sue" died of starvation after contracting a throat infection from eating rotten meat.
5. Triceratops was one of T-Rex's victims.

Answer: True

Some fossilized Triceratops bones contain large, deep bite marks. When compared with the teeth of a T-rex, they are a perfect match.
6. Which group of dinosaurs did T-Rex belong to?

Answer: Theropods

T-Rex belonged to a group of dinosaurs called Theropods. This group contained all the meat-eating dinosaurs.

The Sauropods were huge four-legged plant-eaters with long snake-like necks.
The Ceratopsians were like reptilian rhinos, with four short legs and sharp horns.

The Ornithopods were two-legged plant-eaters. Many had fancy crests on their heads. Scientists believe that these herbivores made up most of T-Rex's diet.
7. Albertosaurus was one of T-Rex's closest relatives.

Answer: True

T-Rex and Albertosaurus both belonged to the family 'Tyrannosauridae'. Albertosaurus was smaller, measuring around 9m in length while T-Rex measured 14m.
8. T-Rex's arms were about the same length as human arms.

Answer: True

Believe it or not, T-Rex's arms were no longer than our own. No wonder they look so out of place! Scientists still aren't sure what T-Rex used its arms for, but say they were probably used for stabilizing the dinosaur and helping it get back on its feet after long periods spent sleeping on the ground.
9. T-Rex walked with its tail touching the ground.

Answer: False

Scientists believe that all dinosaurs walked with their tails held off the ground. While hundreds of fossilized footprints have been found, none of them are accompanied by tail-drag marks.
10. Who was the first person to suggest that T-rex was a scavenger rather than a hunter?

Answer: Lawrence Lamb

Canadian palaeontologist Lawrence Lambe was the first person to suggest that Tyrannosaurs were slow, lumbering creatures, incapable of catching live prey. However, the large teeth, heavily reinforced skulls and powerful jaw muscles point to these animals being strong and fearsome predators.
