Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the major causes of depression?

Answer: All of these

There is a major difference between suffering from depression and being depressed. Depression is a lot more intense and it can last for longer periods of time than normal. It can also prevent its victims from leading normal lives and lead to tragic events, such as unpredictable suffering and suicide.
2. What age group suffers mostly from major depression?

Answer: Young women

About twice as many women have the disease as men. This is because they go through hormonal changes like menstruation, unplanned pregnancies, miscarriages or menopause. This can also result from single mothers balancing a career and raising a family alone or caring for an elderly parent, if the person is genetically susceptible to depression.
3. How long do mood swings happen for bipolar disorder victims?

Answer: A few days to many years

Bipolar disorder is when its victims get overly happy and then go into uncontrollable rages. Sometimes they can be in one mood for a long time before going into the opposite mood.
4. Severe depression accompanied by hallucinations and delusions are symptoms of which of these?

Answer: Psychotic depression

25% of depression victims have contracted this illness. It is very similar to schizophrenia. Psychotic depression is also harder to cure in the respect that many of these victims are too embarrassed to admit they have this disease.
5. People who often make impulsive, regrettable decisions, such as spending large amounts of money at once, most likely suffer from which of these?

Answer: Bipolar disorder

This is when they go through their manic phases and get over energetic.
6. Dysthymia is the least serious form of depression, but what effects does it have on its victims?

Answer: It lasts longer than other forms of depression and can lead to double depression

Double depression is when dysthymia victims also experience major depression. Dysthymia victims can function well but they are chronically unhappy. It also causes sudden fits of fatigue and sluggishness.
7. What percentage of Americans suffer from seasonal affective disorder?

Answer: 5%

This usually happens to people who live in areas with higher or lower latitudes. In the winter, they eat and sleep too much, lose their energy and want to be left alone constantly. In the summer, they lose their appetite and go through periods of insomnia.
8. What is bipolar disorder also commonly called?

Answer: Manic depression

These victims go through phases of overjoy to over-sadness, sometimes for long periods of time.
9. How would you know when a depressed person is contemplating suicide?

Answer: All of these

They also perform dangerous, deadly risks, such as driving into oncoming traffic. If someone even drops a hint of suicide, you should try to get help for that person.
10. How can you tell if someone suffers from depression when you first meet that person?

Answer: You can't. There are no obvious clues

Sometimes you can know someone for years and not know that they suffer from depression.
