Question 1 of 10
1. There are three types of protists, one of which is animal-like. What is the term used to describe the animal-like protists? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. The other two types of protists are plant-like and fungi-like. Although fungi-like protists do not have a term to describe them, what is the term used to characterize plant-like protists? Hint

Question 3 of 10

Question 4 of 10
4. There are four main groups of protozoans: amoebas, flagellates, ciliates, and sporozoans. Plasmodium is a type of sporozoan that causes a disease. Which disease does plasmodium cause? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Green algae alternate between living as a haploid organism, which is an organism with only one set of chromosomes, and a diploid organism, which is an organism with two sets of chromosomes. What is the term used to describe the haploid form of an organism? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. There are three categories of fungi-like protists. Water molds make up the first category. What makes up the other two categories?(Hint: One answer applies to both.) Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Slime molds vary in color and live in cool, moist, shady places. There are two types of slime molds. One type of slime molds is plasmodial slime molds. The other type is cellular slime molds.

Question 8 of 10
8. Slime molds are also similar to another type of protist. This is because the life cycles and methods of obtaining food for both slime molds and protists are similar. What other type of protists are slime molds compared to? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Water molds have a white, fuzzy appearance. They are similar to fungi because of the way in which they obtain food, but are classified as protists. Why are water molds classified as protists instead of fungi? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. There is little evidence to prove where protists originated from, but biologists are currently testing DNA and RNA to find an answer. However, biologists do agree on the ancestry of one group of protists. What do biologists say originated from ancient green algae? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are three types of protists, one of which is animal-like. What is the term used to describe the animal-like protists?

Answer: protozoans

An example of a protozoan is an amoeba, which lives in either salt or fresh water. Amoebas reproduce by binary fission, an asexual form of reproduction. Another example is a paramecium which also reproduce asexually.
2. The other two types of protists are plant-like and fungi-like. Although fungi-like protists do not have a term to describe them, what is the term used to characterize plant-like protists?

Answer: algae

There are six types of algae: euglenoids, diatoms, dinoflagellates, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. Algae are also known for creating colonies, or a group of cells living together.
3. There are four ways in which a protozoan can move. They can either move by using flagella, cilia, spores, or pseudopodia. What are pseudopodia?

Answer: cytoplasm containing extensions

A flagellum is a long whiplike structure and cilia are the short hairlike fibers. A contractile vacuole collects and pumps out excess water. This organelle is especially beneficial to amoebas because of their moist environments.
4. There are four main groups of protozoans: amoebas, flagellates, ciliates, and sporozoans. Plasmodium is a type of sporozoan that causes a disease. Which disease does plasmodium cause?

Answer: malaria

Malaria is most common in tropical climates. Malaria can be transmitted to other mammals besides humans, such as monkeys, and birds can also suffer from malaria. Mosquitoes transfer plasmodium into humans. There are antibiotics that are used to treat malaria.
5. Green algae alternate between living as a haploid organism, which is an organism with only one set of chromosomes, and a diploid organism, which is an organism with two sets of chromosomes. What is the term used to describe the haploid form of an organism?

Answer: gametophyte

This process is called Alternation of Generations. This happens when the sex cells of the gametophyte join together to create a zygote which will then develop into a sporophyte, or a diploid organism. Eventually, the organism becomes haploid, which begins the process again.
6. There are three categories of fungi-like protists. Water molds make up the first category. What makes up the other two categories?(Hint: One answer applies to both.)

Answer: slime molds

Slime molds share some characteristics of animal-like protists and some of fungi-like protists. Slime molds make up two categories because there are two different types of slime molds.
7. Slime molds vary in color and live in cool, moist, shady places. There are two types of slime molds. One type of slime molds is plasmodial slime molds. The other type is cellular slime molds.

Answer: True

Plasmodial slime molds belong to the phylum Myxomycota. Cellular slime molds belong to the phylum Acrasiomycota. Both types of slime molds produce spores for reproduction.
8. Slime molds are also similar to another type of protist. This is because the life cycles and methods of obtaining food for both slime molds and protists are similar. What other type of protists are slime molds compared to?

Answer: protozoan

Slime molds are animal-like due to their life cycles and obtain their food the same way amoebas do, by moving around and engulfing it. Slime molds; however, are similar to fungi because they create spores for reproduction.
9. Water molds have a white, fuzzy appearance. They are similar to fungi because of the way in which they obtain food, but are classified as protists. Why are water molds classified as protists instead of fungi?

Answer: water molds produce flagellated reproductive cells

Fungi can never make flagellated reproductive cells and this is why water molds are considered protists. Downy mildews cause disease in plants and cellular slime molds remain haploid during their life cycles.
10. There is little evidence to prove where protists originated from, but biologists are currently testing DNA and RNA to find an answer. However, biologists do agree on the ancestry of one group of protists. What do biologists say originated from ancient green algae?

Answer: modern plants

This has been discovered by comparing the RNA sequences of modern plants and green algae.
