Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first organized game took place in 1846 between the New York Nine and the Knickerbockers. The Nine won 23-1. Why was this score so high?

Answer: The first team to reach 21 runs won the game

This game was played under Alexander Cartwright's rules. It had been argued for decades if he or Abner Doubleday were the inventor of baseball. Cartwright owned the Knickerbockers and umpired the game. Under his rules, the first team to reach 21 runs wins the game. Also, in order for a player to walk, he had to receive nine balls, instead of modern day's four.

The first fine in history took place in this game. The umpire/owner Cartwright, fined a player only known as Davis, six cents for swearing.

The game was played at Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey on June 19, 1846. The Knickerbockers would later in 1849, be the first to wear uniforms consisting of blue wool pantaloons, a white flannel shirt, and a straw hat.
2. In which year was the first organized league formed?

Answer: 1857

The first official league was called National Association of Baseball Clubs. All the games were played at the Fashion Race Course in Jamaica, New York. Admission to spectators was 50 cents. The season would run only from July to October because some teams complained that it would be too hot to play before July.

In 1859, another league called the National Association of Baseball Players was formed to display the sport on the west coast. They quickly demolished the reputation by the other league, that baseball was a gentleman's game.
3. In 1874, the Boston Red Caps and Philadelphia Athletics of the National Association, played an exhibition game in which country to promote the sport?

Answer: England

In July 1874, the two teams went on an overseas tour for a series of exhibition games in England. They played both baseball and cricket. However, the British seemed uninterested in baseball.
4. In 1875, Fred Thayer of Harvard invents the first catcher's mitt. He shared it with college classmate Jim Tyng who tested it in a game. The rest of that is history. Also in this year, Joe Borden did what for the first time in baseball?

Answer: Pitched a no-hitter

Borden, aka Joe Josephs of the Philadelphia's, pitched the first recorded no-hitter against the Chicago White Stockings. Borden went on to play for one season in the National League. In addition to Thayer inventing the catcher's mitt, he later invented the first inflated chest protector.
5. The National League began in 1876 with eight teams. Which of the following was not one of them?

Answer: Rockford Forest Citys

The Forest Citys were in the National Association. In 1876, the Chicago White Stockings (later Cubs) won the first National League pennant with a 52-14 record, six games ahead of St. Louis. Ross Barnes, Cap Anson, and Paul Hines led Chicago with their bats, and Al Spalding threw a 47-12 season.
6. In 1882, Pete Browning of the Louisville Eclipse in the American Association, won the batting title with a .378 average, 36 points ahead of the runner-up. What would later happen to Browning that would be a first in baseball?

Answer: A bat was made personally for him

The bat was made for him by J.A. "Bud" Hillerich, a rather accidental occurrence that would lead to the formation of Hillerich and Bradsby, later, the world's largest batmaker.
7. What was invented for baseball in 1886?

Answer: Ladies Day

The pentagon-shaped home plate would be introduced to baseball for the 1900 season replacing the diamond-shaped plate, and concession stands were with the invent of baseball decades earlier. In 1887, a different strike zone was outlined to be from the top of the shoulders to the bottom of the knees.

However, this answer is Ladies Day, invented by Cincinnati owner Aaron Stern. Stern observed that women swarmed to the ballpark whenever his pitcher, Tony Mullane was scheduled to pitch. Stern then had Mullane pitch against low-fan turnout teams to pack his ballpark. Thus, Ladies Day was born. Brooklyn owner Charles Byrne noticed with his games that when women were in attendance, the less rowdy the crowd was, due to the women keeping things in order.

This led Byrne to have every home game a Ladies Day with their admission half-off. This saved Byrne huge amounts of money in not having to hire as many special police for games.
8. In 1887, White Stockings owner Cap Anson created the first spring training session in history for the National League. In the American Association, several St. Louis Browns' players were paid for endorsing a product for the first time. What was the product's name?

Answer: Merrell's Penetrating Oil

The other's were fictitous. Merrell's Penetrating Oil was marketed as a cure for bruises and muscle pulls. The Browns' most popular player, Tip O'Neill, was reported to be the first to ever receive money for his endorsement.
9. In 1891, Pete Browning of the Pittsburgh Pirates was fined for what?

Answer: Not wearing spikes on his shoes

Spikes had been worn prior, but was made mandatory by the National League for the 1891 season. Browning, the outfielder, had only four stolen bases in the season, compared to most everyone stealing 20 or more, and Billy Hamilton of the Phillies stole 111.
10. Which National League team was fined in 1894 for conspiring to alter games?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

None of the other teams existed in 1894, and the National League was the only league in baseball in 1894. After an investigation, it was found that many Oriole players conspired with their groundskeeper, Tom Murphy, to landscape baselines in their home park to prevent their bunts from rolling foul, and to keep the outfield grass high, so illegal balls could be hidden throughout the outfield at propitious moments. Also, the dirt was loosened in front of the pitcher's mound to confuse pitching greats Cy Young and Amos Rusie.
