Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team, in April, had two premierships and three minor premierships taken away due to salary cap breaches?

Answer: Melbourne Storm

This was the largest salary cap scandal to ever rock the National Rugby League or Australian sport for that matter. The Storm's 2007 and 2009 premierships were annulled, as well as their 2006, 2007 and 2008 minor premierships.

In addition, the club was fined $500,000 and were sentenced to finish the season dead last without receiving a single competition point (including in bye rounds).
2. Who replaced Ricky Stuart as Cronulla Sharks coach with seven rounds of the regular season to go?

Answer: Shane Flanagan

Stuart lasted just over three-and-a-half seasons as Sharks coach after arriving at the club in 2007, fresh off being sacked as Roosters coach in 2006.

Shane Flanagan would eventually be employed as Sharks coach on a full-time basis and would lead the club to its first premiership in 2016.
3. In round sixteen, the Sydney Roosters took a home game against the New Zealand Warriors to Lancaster Park in Christchurch. What was the score in that match?

Answer: Warriors 20-18

In a thriller, the Warriors trailed 18-8 with five minutes remaining but scored two tries to steal a famous 20-18 victory, with Kevin Locke scoring the winning try nearing fulltime.
4. If it wasn't for the salary cap breaches of another team, which team would have won the wooden spoon?

Answer: North Queensland Cowboys

Despite boasting the game's best player in Johnathan Thurston, the North Queensland Cowboys suffered a dismal 2010 season in which they won only five games to finish 15th on the ladder. Four of those wins were, however, against teams that made the finals, including an away win over the eventual runners-up Sydney Roosters in round nine.

Had it not been for the punishments handed to Melbourne Storm for salary cap breaches, the Cowboys would have won their fourth wooden spoon, and first since 2000. The Storm were sentenced to finish the season dead last without receiving a single competition point (including in bye rounds).
5. Which Sydney-based team returned to the finals for the first time since 2004, finishing in second place after the home and away rounds?

Answer: Penrith Panthers

The Panthers' second-place finish (only behind the Dragons) was their highest since winning the 2003 premiership. The 645 points they scored during the regular season was also the highest of any side - 61 points more than the second-best attacking side, the South Sydney Rabbitohs, who finished ninth.

Wests Tigers also ended a finals drought, their third-place finish being their highest since winning the 2005 premiership.
6. Which club failed to make the finals for the first time since 1991?

Answer: Brisbane Broncos

The Broncos' 10th-place finish ended an 18-year streak of qualifying for the finals, during which they won six premierships (1992, 1993, 1997 (Super League), 1998, 2000 and 2006).

With the Storm also missing the finals this season due to salary cap breaches, it meant that every club has failed to reach the finals in at least one season since 2002.
7. Queensland's 3-0 whitewash in the 2010 State of Origin series was their first since what year?

Answer: 1995

The Maroons' State of Origin series victory marked Mal Meninga's fifth from as many years since taking over as coach in 2006. In a decade at the helm, he only lost one series, in 2014, which ended an eight-year series winning streak. Conversely, Meninga did not win an Origin series as captain of the Maroons between 1992 and 1994.
8. No team conceded less than 300 points during the regular season.

Answer: False

St George Illawarra finished the season as the best defensive team, letting in only 299 points. The Melbourne Storm were the next-best defensive team, leaking 363 points, but of course had all of their points taken away due to salary cap breaches.
9. Where did the Gold Coast Titans play their preliminary final against the Sydney Roosters?

Answer: Suncorp Stadium

This was the Gold Coast Titans' first preliminary final since joining the NRL in 2007. Because their regular home ground, Skilled Park, was deemed too small to host such a match it was decided by the NRL that it would be played at the larger Suncorp Stadium, a considerable distance away from their home ground. Ultimately, they lost to the Sydney Roosters 32-6.
10. Which player won the Clive Churchill Medal for best-on-ground in the Grand Final?

Answer: Darius Boyd

This was Darius Boyd's second NRL premiership, after previously featuring as a teenage winger in the Brisbane Broncos side that was victorious in 2006. This was also Wayne Bennett's seventh premiership title, but first outside of the Broncos. In 2009, he took on the Dragons coaching role with the intention of landing the club its first premiership as a merged entity.
