Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Name the Australian player beaten by Serena Williams in the first round.

Answer: Ashleigh Barty

Ashleigh Barty was a wildcard entry into the tournament, but drew the short straw at her home Major, drawing the player who in 2013 had her most dominant season ever. It wasn't therefore surprising she only managed to win three games off the American.
2. Rafael Nadal defeated Bernard Tomic 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round.

Answer: False

Nadal won the first set 6-4, before Tomic retired due to a hip injury which would force him off the tour for two months.
3. Which former two-time Grand Slam champion made a brief playing comeback in the doubles competition?

Answer: Pat Rafter

Rafter and Hewitt teamed up for the men's doubles, but the pair lost their first match to the eventual runners-up Eric Butorac and Raven Klaasen.
4. Which Australian lasted the furthest in the women's draw?

Answer: Casey Dellacqua

Casey Dellacqua repeated her 2008 effort in reaching the fourth round where she lost to Canadian youngster Eugenie Bouchard.
5. Which player knocked Serena Williams out of the tournament in the fourth round?

Answer: Ana Ivanovic

Going into that fourth round clash, Ana Ivanovic had never won a set against Serena Williams, and after Williams won the first set 6-4 it appeared she had one foot in the quarter-finals.

However, Ivanovic, a former world number one who hadn't won a title since November 2011, nor beaten a reigning world number one since 2007, would not face another break point for the remainder of the match, winning by the scoreline of 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

It was later revealed that Williams was hindered by a back injury, which probably explained her ordinary performance against Ivanovic.
6. Two-time defending champion Victoria Azarenka was attempting to become the first player since Martina Hingis to win three consecutive Australian Opens. Who ended her chances of doing that?

Answer: Agnieszka Radwanska

Azarenka lost to Agnieszka Radwanska in three sets, the final set to love. Radwanska's win ended a seven-match winning streak by Azarenka against the Pole, and also ended an eighteen-match winning streak at the Australian Open which also included title wins in 2012 and 2013. This was the second time Radwanska had beaten a defending champion at a Major, after upsetting Maria Sharapova at the 2007 US Open.

Martin Hingis won her three titles in 1997-1998-1999.
7. Who did Grigor Dimitrov beat in the fourth round en route to reaching his first Grand Slam quarter-final?

Answer: Roberto Bautista Agut

Grigor Dimitrov became the first man from Bulgaria to reach a Major quarter-final. On the women's side, Tsvetana Pironkova had previously reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon, in 2010.
8. Who defeated three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic in five sets in the quarter-finals?

Answer: Stan Wawrinka

This was the second consecutive year that Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka had fought out a five-set match at the Australian Open, after the Serb won that match by 12-10 in the final set. However, this time it was Wawrinka who prevailed, winning it 9-7 in the fifth.
Novak Djokovic had won the 2011, 2012 and 2013 titles.
9. Who did Li Na beat to win the women's title?

Answer: Dominika Cibulkova

This was Li Na's third Australian Open final, and fourth Major final overall.

After losing to Kim Clijsters and Victoria Azarenka in 2011 and 2013 respectively, it proved to be third time lucky for Li, who easily defeated first-time Major finalist Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets to win her second Major title (she won the French Open in 2011).
10. Rafael Nadal became the first man in the Open Era to win each of the four Majors at least twice?

Answer: False

Rafael Nadal was attempting to become the first man in the Open Era to win each of the four Majors at least twice, and though he reached the final, he was beaten in four sets by Stan Wawrinka, who in twelve previous meetings against the Spaniard could not take a set off him (though a few sets in recent matches had gone to tiebreaks).

Nadal was also attempting to equal Pete Sampras' haul of 14 Major titles, but would eventually equal that mark at the French Open later that year.
11. Which future Grand Slam finalist made his or her debut at the 2014 Australian Open?

Answer: Dominic Thiem

Dominic Thiem qualified for the main draw and reached the second round, where he lost to Kevin Anderson.
12. What was the scoreline in the quarter-final match between Simona Halep and Dominika Cibulkova?

Answer: Cibulkova 6-3, 6-0

Simona Halep's first Grand Slam quarter-final resulted in a heavy defeat to Dominika Cibulkova, who by winning reached her first Grand Slam semi-final since 2009.
13. Roger Federer lost to Rafael Nadal in the semi-final.

Answer: True

Nadal won in straight sets, just the second time he had beaten Federer in straight sets at a Major (the other time being the 2008 French Open final).
14. Li Na's coach, Carlos Rodriguez, previously coached which former Australian Open champion?

Answer: Justine Henin

Rodriguez was Justine Henin's coach when she won the Australian Open for the only time in 2004.
15. The retractable roof installed on the redeveloped Margaret Court Arena was functional.

Answer: False

It wouldn't be until 2015 that the retractable roof installed on Margaret Court Arena would be operational.
