However, Ivanovic, a former world number one who hadn't won a title since November 2011, nor beaten a reigning world number one since 2007, would not face another break point for the remainder of the match, winning by the scoreline of 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

It was later revealed that Williams was hindered by a back injury, which probably explained her ordinary performance against Ivanovic.

Azarenka lost to Agnieszka Radwanska in three sets, the final set to love. Radwanska's win ended a seven-match winning streak by Azarenka against the Pole, and also ended an eighteen-match winning streak at the Australian Open which also included title wins in 2012 and 2013. This was the second time Radwanska had beaten a defending champion at a Major, after upsetting Maria Sharapova at the 2007 US Open.
