It was their first grand slam and first title ever as a team. The women's doubles had a strong crowd following when the favored Williams' sisters Serena and Venus played.

Unfortunately, they lost in the quarterfinals to Chinese pair and 7th seeded Zi Yan and Jie Zheng in three sets. Alsou Safina is a famous singer in Russia and is not a sister of Dinara.

Interestingly, her brother is named Marat as well.

This 8th seeded duo managed to hold off the 7th seeds French Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra, and won their first grand slam title. Another Israeli Shahar Peer, made it to the finals of the women's doubles.

Janko Tipsarevic frightened Roger Federer during their third round encounter losing in a 5-set thriller. This unseeded Belgrade native was ranked 49th in the ATP rankings prior to the Open. The three better known Serbians made it to the semi-finals or better.

Casey Dellacqua didn't get past the first round of the Australian Open women's singles in five attempts but the sixth time was a charm. She delighted the home crowd by ousting 15th seeded lefty Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, and the 18th seeded former Australian Open champion Amelie Mauresmo before losing to 3rd seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia. Casey's doubles partner, Jessica Moore, was the losing finalist in the women's singles draw of the championship and made it to the second round in the women's singles draw.

Philipp's 5 set entertaining win over Andy Roddick lasted until the wee hours in the morning. The match was that high quality with both players delivered more winners than unforced errors. Both players had a total of 74 aces and 183 winners. Already retired, Boris Becker was a former Australian open champion with wins in 1991 and 1996.

It would be interesting to know how many have chosen Adolf Hitler.

Lleyton Hewitt's match with Marcos Baghdatis ended a little after 4:30 am in front of a standout crowd cheering for both parties. Hewitt made it to the fourth round before bowing out to the eventual champion Novak Djokovic. All other choices were Aussie tennis players except for the late Steve Irwin, popularly known in the program, "Crocodile Hunter".

That broke the record of 61,083 set during the 2007 US Open on 1st September 2007. The US Open was the only other grand slam tournament that featured night time matches.

Fifth seeded Maria Sharapova destroyed the women's field by defeating each opponent in straight sets, having won over dangerous opponents namely Lindsay Davenport, Elena Dementieva, the top seed Justin Henin, Jelena Jankovic, and finally Anna Ivanovic in the finals. The win gave her her third grand slam title, having won the Wimbledon and US Open earlier.

Nicknamed as Nole by his family, Novak Djokovic became the first Serbian to have won a grand slam title in tennis. He was seeded third and was not the clear favorite until he beat the defending champion and number one ranked Swiss star, Roger Federer.
