Jelena Dokic was ranked number 187 in the world upon entry to the 2009 Australian Open. She caused a number of upsets as she beat seeded players Caroline Wozniacki, Anna Chakvetadze, and Alisa Kleybanova along the way. She made it to the quarterfinals where she lost to no. 3 Dinara Safina.
