Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of Ruth, Mays, Aaron, and Bonds, which players wore the number 24?

Answer: Mays and Bonds

Babe Ruth would be the lowest one on the pole with this one. In Ruth's days, jersey numbers were generally low, and coincided with the number of players on the team. Mays wore the infamous 24 while Bonds wore the number 24 with the Pirates, then 25 with the Giants. Henry Aaron wore the number 44, which ironically matched his season home run total four times.
2. Which of the 600 club members never hit 50 home runs in a season throughout their career?

Answer: Hank Aaron

Amazingly, 47 in 1971 was the closest that Aaron ever came to the 50 mark. He hit 40 or more eight times in his career. Willie Mays hit 50+ twice, and just as amazing, he did it 10 years apart. The Babe did it four times. Bonds will always be remembered for his 73 in 2001.
3. Of these four greats, who began their career by winning a Rookie of the Year Award?

Answer: Willie Mays

The Rookie of the Year award did not begin until 1949, so that took the Babe out of the picture. Mays won it in 1951 with the Giants for hitting 20 home runs with 127 hits. He won it over Chet Nichols of the Boston Braves.
4. Which member was the quickest in their career to bat over .350 in a season?

Answer: Hank Aaron

Aaron had already won a batting title in 1956 with the Braves, then the NL MVP in 1957. In his sixth season in 1959, Hank batted .355 to win his second batting title. It would take the Babe seven seasons to bat .376. Bonds took 17 seasons before he reached the .350 plateau, and Willie Mays never saw it.
5. The first four 600 home run club members all played for two franchises throughout their entire career except for one. Which player provided their service to three different teams?

Answer: Babe Ruth

While Mays played for the Giants and Mets, Bonds with the Pirates and Giants, and Aaron with the Braves and Brewers, the Babe played for three teams in his career. 1914-1918 saw him in a Red Sox uniform. 1919-1934 he donned the pinstripes of New York. His final season in 1935 was with the Boston Braves, where he hit his final six of 714 home runs.
6. To measure how much you know personally about these four greats, who has the most letters in their full born name?

Answer: Willie Mays

Willie Howard Mays Jr leads this category with 18. George Herman Ruth is second, Henry Louis Aaron and Barry Lamar Bonds both have 15. Both Mays and Aaron were born in Alabama, while Bonds was born in California, and Ruth in Maryland.
7. Which member took the shortest amount of time (number of seasons) in their career to reach the 600 pHR lateau?

Answer: Barry Bonds

All the others touched the 600 mark in their 18th season except for Bonds. Barry hit his 600th in his 17th season in 2002. From 2000-2004, Bonds hit a remarkable 258 home runs, including 73 in 2001.
8. Which of the members stole the most bases in their career?

Answer: Barry Bonds

With Ruth stealing only 123 and Aaron stealing 240, Mays was the thief of 338 before he retired. Bonds lifted over 500 bases in his career. He was given membership into the 40-40 club in 1996, when he hit 42 home runs and stole 40 bases.
9. All these greats won a season MVP Award. Who took the longest to win it?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Both Aaron and Mays took only four seasons to the win the coveted award. Bonds won his first in 1990 during his fifth season with the Pirates. Strangely enough, the Babe did not win his MVP until his 10th season in 1923. In 1920 and 1921 when the Babe hit over 50 home runs in a season, there was no MVP awarded.
10. Which of the club members went to Arizona State University?

Answer: Barry Bonds

All the others were 19-year olds when they joined the Major Leagues. Bonds spent three seasons with the Arizona State University Sun Devils, which delayed his entry into the majors until he was 21 in 1986.
