Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these members of the 600 Home Run Club never hit 50 home runs in a season during his career?

Answer: Hank Aaron

Hank's season high was 47 in 1971 with the Braves. Eight times in his career, he hit 40+ home runs in a season. Hank was the 1957 National League MVP with the Braves. He retired with 755 career home runs.
2. In addition to the 600 Home Run Club, having 3000 hits in a career put one in greater standing in the club. Which of these did not have 3000 hits in their career?

Answer: Barry Bonds

If no member of the club had 3000 hits, that answer would not be allowed for time dependency. Hank Aaron was the first 600 member to have 3000 hits, retiring with 3771, then Willie Mays had 3283 also. Bonds retired with 2925, and Babe Ruth didn't make it either with 2873 hits.
3. Which of these 600 Home Run Club members hit 60 home runs in a season the most times?

Answer: Sammy Sosa

Sosa hit 66 in 1998, 63 in 1999, and 64 in 2001. Ruth's only 60 home run season was in 1927. Bonds hit 73 in 2001. Griffey Jr never hit 60 in a season.
4. Which of these sluggers was the youngest when they became a member of the 600 Home Run Club?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth was 36 years old when he touched the 600-mark in 1931. Aaron and Bonds were both 37 when they reached the milestone in 1974 and 2007 respectively. Frank Robinson is not a member of the club and retired with 586. Alex Rodriguez was 35 years old, younger than the Babe when he hit the mark.
5. Who was the first left-handed slugger to be a member of the 600 Club?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Of the others, only Junior was a left-handed batter. Ruth hit his 600th home run in 1931 with the Yankees. He hit 46 in the season, his sixth of seven consecutive 40+ home runs seasons.
6. Which of these 600 Home Run Club members played for only two teams in their entire career?

Answer: Barry Bonds

Bonds played seven seasons from 1986-1992 for the Pirates. The rest of his 15-season career was with the Giants. Willie Mays and Hank Aaron also played for two teams, Mays with the Giants and Mets, and Aaron with the Braves and Brewers. Griffey played with the Mariners, Reds, and White Sox. Sosa played with the Cubs, White Sox, Rangers, and Orioles.

The Babe played for the Red Sox, Yankees, and Braves.
7. Which of these members of the 600 Home Run Club struck out the fewest times in their career?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth tops this list with the fewest strikeouts. The Babe struck out 1330 times in 22 seasons. Second on this list is Barry Bonds with 1539 strikeouts over 22 seasons. Griffey struck out 1779 times in 22 seasons. Sosa had the highest amount in less time, striking out out 2306 times in his 18 seasons.
8. Which of these 600 Home Run Club members was born in the same city, and has the same birthdate of November 21 as the great Hall of Famer Stan Musial?

Answer: Ken Griffey Jr

Ironically, both were born in Donora, Pennsylvania. Even more, Musial was born on November 21, 1920, and Griffey on November 21, 1969. Musial played from 1941-1963 and hit 475 career home runs. Junior hit 630, but did not have the three MVPs or seven batting titles that Musial retired with.
9. The great Willie Mays began his career with the 1951 Rookie of the Year Award, and retired as a 600 Home Run Club member in 1973. Which of these other 600 members came the closest to winning the Rookie of the Year Award also?

Answer: Ken Griffey Jr

Mays won the Rookie of the Year Award with the New York Giants in a landslide over runner-up Chet Nichols of the Boston Braves and Clem Labine of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Griffey was in the number three spot in 1989 with the Mariners, losing to Gregg Olson of the Orioles and Tom Gordon of the Royals. Aaron finished fourth in his voting in 1954 with the Braves. Bonds was number 6 with the Pirates in 1986. Sammy Sosa was never in the running for the Rookie of the Year Award.
10. Some baseball fans might know that Babe Ruth was the first member of the 600 Home Run Club, and that Willie Mays was the second member and Hank Aaron the third. Who became the fourth member?

Answer: Barry Bonds

In 1969, Mays pushed Ruth over in the seat by being the second. The club had to buy a bigger sofa in 1972 when Aaron joined the club. The next player to reach 600 was Barry Bonds of the Giants, whose 73 home runs in 2001 pushed him over the milestone. Sosa joined the club in 2007 with the Orioles, then Griffey in 2008 with the Reds. A-Rod became a member in 2010 with the Yankees.
