Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1929, Babe Ruth became the first player in history to reach 500 home runs. It took 11 years for someone else to reach the milestone. Who was this baseball great?

Answer: Jimmie Foxx

Foxx accomplished this feat while a member of the Boston Red Sox. Until Alex Rodriguez hit his 500th home run in 2007, Foxx was the youngest player ever to reach 500 at 32 years old. Unfortunately, injuries caught up quickly to Foxx and he would only hit 34 more homers in his career.
2. Which of the following members finished with at least 1900 career RBIs?

Answer: Eddie Murray

Murray had 1,917 RBIs, which he owes in large part to his longevity since he played in over 3,000 games. The other three just didn't play in nearly as many games as Murray. McGwire only had 1,414 RBIs but played in fewer than 1,900 games. Williams had 1,839 RBIs in 2,292 games. Mantle had 1,509 RBIs in 2,401 games.
3. Which of these players never hit 50 home runs in a single season?

Answer: Ted Williams

Williams' career high was 43 in 1949 and it was the only time he hit at least 40. Foxx reached 50 twice in his career including 58 in 1932. Mantle hit 52 in 1956 which is the year he won the triple crown. Thome hit 52 in 2002 with the Indians.
4. How many times did Mike Schmidt lead the National League in home runs?

Answer: 8

Schmidt led the league a remarkable eight times during his career which, when he retired, was second only to Babe Ruth's 12. Schmidt's first home run title came in 1974 and his final one was in 1986. He won three NL MVP awards during that span.
5. Which of the following players never won multiple MVP awards?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth only won one MVP award. The MVP voting process has changed dramatically over the years, and in the time Ruth played his prime years, once a player won an MVP, he was ineligible to win a second; this rule changed in 1931.
6. Who was the first player to hit 500 home runs and collect 3,000 career hits?

Answer: Hank Aaron

Hank Aaron hit his 500th homer in 1968 and got his 3,000th hit on May 17, 1970 which was only two months before Mays collected his 3,000th hit to join the rare club. It took 26 years for another player to reach both milestones, and that player was Eddie Murray.
7. Lou Gehrig's career was cut short due to a fatal disease he had contracted and, as a result, he finished just seven home runs shy of 500. Who else finished his career with 493 home runs?

Answer: Fred McGriff

McGriff's career came to an end in 2004 after hitting two home runs in 72 at bats. Musial and Stargell both finished with 475 home runs, while Kaline fell well short of 500, ending with 399. Kaline did, however, sneak in to the 3,000 hit club, finishing with 3,007.
8. At the time of his retirement, this player held the record for the most seasons with at least 60 home runs with three. The odd thing about this is that he never led his league in any of those years. Who is this unfortunate soul?

Answer: Sammy Sosa

At the moment of Sosa's final game, only eight times in the history of the game had someone hit at least 60 in a season and three of them were his, but he never led the league while hitting 60. Sosa hit 66 in 1998, trailing McGwire's 70. The very next year Sosa hit 63 only to be outdone again by Big Mac's 65. Sosa hit 64 homers in 2001 when Barry Bonds broke McGwire's record by hitting 73.
9. Barry Bonds hit his 756th home run in 2007 to break Hank Aaron's all-time home run record. How many home runs did he have after he played the final game of his career?

Answer: 762

Bonds' 2007 season proved to be his last and he went on to hit six more home runs after breaking Aaron's record. Bonds has not been able to live down the heavy cloud of suspicion regarding steroids, and many refuse to accept his legitimacy as baseball's home run king.

Despite putting up one of the most impressive careers in the history of the game, Bonds failed to receive 40% of hall of fame votes in his first year of eligibility in 2013.
10. Which of the following players hit more than 600 career home runs?

Answer: Jim Thome

Thome hit his 600th home run in 2011 becoming just the eighth player to do so, but the fifth in under a decade, as Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey, Jr., Sammy Sosa and Alex Rodriguez all joined the club in the 21st century.
