Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On July 27, 2011, Angels pitcher Ervin Santana threw a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians. This was the first Angel complete game no-hitter since which season?

Answer: 1984

Santana allowed one run by the Indians in the first inning, then finished his no-hitter in a 3-1 win against Cleveland. Mike Witt threw his complete game no-hitter on the last day of the 1984 season against the Texas Rangers. Both Mark Langston and Mike Witt combined for a no-hitter in 1990 against the Mariners.

The great Nolan Ryan threw four no-hitters for the Angels, but well before Witt's and Santana's. Santana's no-hitter in July 2011 was only the Angels' ninth no-hitter in franchise history, which began in 1961.

It was the first time that the Indians had been no-hit since September 1993.
2. From May 15 to July 16 1941, the great Joe DiMaggio had a record-breaking 56-game hitting streak. During his streak, Yankee Joe faced two Hall of Fame pitchers. One was the great Bob Feller of the Indians. Who was the other pitcher?

Answer: Hal Newhouser

DiMaggio faced only four Hall of Fame pitchers during his streak, the other two in the names of Lefty Grove and Ted Lyons. Against Feller, Joe went 2-for-4 and 1-for-2, and against Newhouser, Joe went 1-for-5 both times. DiMaggio broke the baseball consecutive game streak of 45 set by Willie Keeler in 1897.
3. Which of these teams not only won a World Series, but shut out their opponents four games to none, and did it by scoring only 13 runs in the entire series?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

Like the previous World Series against Minnesota, Sandy Koufax did not pitch in game one (due to Yom Kippur), and Drysdale went in his place again in 1966 against the Orioles. Although the Orioles had some big bats during the season in the likes of Brooks and Frank Robinson along with Boog Powell, their bats didn?t shine much in the series.

It was Baltimore?s pitching that stifled the Dodger bats, allowing only three runs on 17 hits. Wally Bunker, Moe Drabowsky, Dave McNally, and Jim Palmer all won a game each, and combined for 28 strikeouts during the short series.
4. In the first 100 years of Major League Baseball from 1901-2000, which team set a record for losing 23 consecutive games in a season?

Answer: Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies lost 23 straight in the 1961 season, finishing the season out with a 47-107 record. They finished a dismal 46 games behind the NL Champion Cincinnati Reds. The Phillies had no starter bat over .280, or a starting pitcher with a .400 win-loss percentage. In 2011, the Seattle Mariners came close to that mark with 17 of their own.
5. In 2011, Derek Jeter became the first Yankee in history to compile 3000 career hits. Who was the very first all-American League player to reach 3000 hits?

Answer: Ty Cobb

Speaker was an all-American League player and played around the time Cobb did. Speaker retired with just over 3500 hits while Cobb was the first who surpassed the 4000 hit plateau. Wagner played his entire career in the National League. Anson played his career in the National Association and the National League.
6. Los Angeles Dodger Maury Wills was the first modern-day player to steal 100 bases in a season. Who was the first player in baseball history to steal 100 bases in a season?

Answer: Hugh Nicol

Due to pitching rule changes after the 1886 National League and American Association seasons, six players stole 100 bases in 1887, including those listed. Nicol of the Cincinnati Red Stockings in the AA was the first to reach the 100 plateau with his 137 season total.

The others in the season to reach the milestone were Arlie Latham (129), Charlie Comiskey (117), Monte Ward (111), Pete Browning (103), and Jim Fogarty (102).
7. Which Major League team was the first to lose four World Series before they would take their first crown?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

The Tigers lost three consecutive series 1907-08-09 to the Cubs and Pirates, then lost again in 1934 to the Cardinals. They would finally win their first in 1935 against the Cubs, four games to two. The Cubs won the World Series in their second appearance in 1907.

The Athletics, led by manager Connie Mack, won in their second appearance in 1910. The White Sox won in their first appearance in 1906.
8. Which of these professional baseball leagues lasted the most seasons?

Answer: Federal League

The Players League lasted for only one season in 1890. The winner of the only pennant was the Boston Reds. The Union Association lasted for only one season in 1884. The St. Louis Maroons won the only league pennant by 21 games over the Cincinnati Outlaw Reds. The Federal League tried to become the third Major League in 1914 and 1915, while awarding big money contracts to members of the American and National Leagues. It would last only two seasons. The Southern Association never existed.
9. Players either wear even or odd numbered jerseys. Which of these Hall of Famers *never* wore an even-numbered jersey?

Answer: Dennis Eckersley

Eckersley, or "Eck" as he was nicknamed, played with five teams over 24 seasons, retiring in 1998. He wore the number 37 with the Indians from 1975-1977, then the number 43 the rest of his career with the Red Sox, Cubs, Athletics, and Cardinals. Dennis was inducted into the Hall in 2004. Koufax wore the number 32 for the Dodgers during his entire career. Mantle of the New York Yankees wore the number 6 in his rookie season, then changed to the number 7 for the rest of his Hall of Fame career. Rice spent 16 seasons with the Red Sox while wearing the number 14, retiring in 1989.
10. Who was the first batter in baseball history to win two batting Triple Crown awards?

Answer: Rogers Hornsby

While the others all won one batting Triple Crown, Hornsby won two with the 1922 and 1925 St. Louis Cardinals. Rogers batted over .400 in both those seasons, in addition to batting .424 in 1924. He was also the NL Most Valuable Player in 1925 and 1929.
