Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Detroit Tiger pitcher Mickey Lolich shined in the 1968 World Series by winning three games. Which pitcher sat back with a smile as he himself accomplished that in the previous World Series in 1967?

Answer: Bob Gibson, Cardinals

Both Lolich and teammate Denny McLain (31-6) were above most in the season, but it was Lolich who ruled the mound against the Cardinals in 1968. Gibson won his three in the series against the Red Sox in 1967.
2. In 2014, Matt Williams and Buck Showalter each won the Manager of the Year Award in their respective league. Thinking, "Been there done that", who was the first American League Manager to win the award?

Answer: Tony LaRussa, White Sox

The Manager of the Year Award began in 1983 with Tom Lasorda of the Dodgers and LaRussa winning it. LaRussa would go on to win two more with the Athletics and one with the Cardinals. Mauch managed in an amazing 26 seasons but never saw a World Series game.
3. The Athletics franchise began in 1901 with the new American League. In 1955 the franchise moved to Kansas City, then moved again in 1968 to Oakland. Which of these franchises was the first to move the team to three different cities?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

The other teams had never moved to a different city. The Braves started their National League franchise as the Boston Red Stockings of the new National League in 1876. Although they changed their name to the Beaneaters, Doves, Rustlers, and Braves, the franchise did not move to Milwaukee until 1953.

The team moved again in 1966 to Atlanta (two years before the Athletics moved for a third time).
4. Los Angeles Dodger Clayton Kershaw won both the National League Cy Young and MVP Award in 2014. Who was the first pitcher in history to say, "Been there done that"?

Answer: Don Newcombe, Brooklyn Dodgers

It was the first season for the pitching Cy Young Award in 1956, and Newcombe won it in true form ahead of Sal Maglie and Whitey Ford. He also took the MVP over Maglie and Mickey Mantle. Valenzuela duplicated the feat in 1981 with the Dodgers. Ryan never won the Cy Young Award but was runner-up to the Orioles' Jim Palmer in 1973. Williams, normally an outfielder, pitched in only two innings in his career in 1940 with the Boston Red Sox.
5. In the 2012 World Series, the San Francisco Giants blanked the Detroit Tigers four games to none to win the series. It was a remarkable feat, but which team was the first to provide a World Series skunking in two different seasons?

Answer: New York Yankees

The first-ever blanking in a World Series was in 1907 when the Cubs downed the Tigers four games to none. The 1927 Yankees blanked the Pirates, then the first to duplicate it by defeating the Cardinals in the following season. The Yankees three-peated the skunk in 1932 against the Pirates.
6. Rickey Henderson shattered the stolen base record, well over 100 in 1982, by stealing 130 bases in the season. Who had already been there and done that by being the first to steal 100 bases in a season?

Answer: Maury Wills, Dodgers

Beginning with Mike Witt of the Angels and ending with Vida Blue of Royals, Henderson stole 128 in-between for his Athletics. These included stealing home twice in the season. The others never reached the 100 plateau, and it was Ty Cobb's record of 96 in 1915 that Wills broke in 1962 with 104.
7. Josh Hamilton had a day on May 8, 2012, when he hit four home runs in one game against the Baltimore Orioles. Who was smiling as the first in history to hit four in a game?

Answer: Bobby Lowe, Boston

Lowe was a Boston Beaneater (later Braves in the franchise) in 1894 when he hit 17 round trippers in the season. He finished second to teammate Hugh Duffy who hit 18. Lowe hit his four on May 30. Gehrig was the first in the American to hit four in a game against the Philadelphia Athletics on June 3, 1932.
8. Manager Tony LaRussa retired from the game in 2011 with an amazing 2728 wins at the helm for 33 seasons. Which manager of 33 years beat LaRussa to the punch by also winning over 2700 games first?

Answer: John McGraw

The others did not manage for more than 25 seasons, and none reached the 2000 win mark. McGraw started his managerial career with the Baltimore Orioles of the National League in 1899. He moved the team to New York to become the Giants in 1902. The franchise moved again to San Francisco in 1958.

The all-time managerial win leader was Connie Mack, born Cornelius Alexander McGillicuddy, managed for 53 seasons and retired with 3731 wins, all with the Athletics.
9. Speedster Dee Gordon of the Dodgers stole second base, third base, then home all in the same inning on July 1, 2011. Which of the following said, "Been there done that", by also stealing second, third, and home in the same inning?

Answer: Pete Rose, Phillies

Gordon let it all hang out in that seventh against the Angels. Dee finished the season with 24 thefts as a rookie. Rose was a member of the Phillies in May 1980 when he stole his three against his former Cincinnati Reds. John McGraw of the National League Baltimore Orioles was the first in history to do this against Boston in 1899. Ty Cobb accomplished this four times in his career between 1905 and 1928.
10. Although the New York Yankees didn't see a playoff game in 2008, they were the second American League team in history to top the 4,000,000 attendance mark in the season. Which American League team was the first to top the 4,000,000 attendance mark in a season?

Answer: Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays saw their second consecutive World Series in 1993 and won both. They had 4,057,947 in gate receipts. Toronto and the Colorado Rockies were the first franchises to hit the 4,000,000 mark, both in 1993. The Rockies were a new expansion team in 1993. In a strange twist, the Mets also drew over 4,000,000 fans in that same 2008 Yankee season.
