Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the Major League baseball's first 20-game winner in 2007?

Answer: Josh Beckett (Red Sox)

The others never came to close to 20 wins in the season. Beckett helped the Red Sox along with teammate pitchers Daisuke Matsuzaka and Tim Wakefield. The hitting of Dustin Pedroia, Mike Lowell, and David Ortiz hitting over .300 along with David hitting over 30 home runs, helped the Red Sox to the American League Eastern Division title.
2. Unfortunately, someone had to lose the most games in the season. Which team was it?

Answer: Tampa Bay Devil Rays

The other teams listed won at least 87 games in an admirable season. Tampa Bay went through another dismal season of 66-96, not much better than the Pirates who won two more, and the Royals who won only three more. The Devil Rays continued to be in a slump, not winning more than 70 games in a season since their inauguration into Major League baseball in 1998.
3. Which player hit over 50 home runs in the season and took another home run crown to win his fifth title?

Answer: Alex Rodriguez (Yankees)

The others never reached the 50 home run mark in 2007. A-Rod hit 54 in the season to win his fifth home run title. His previous home run crowns came in 2001-2003, then 2005, and his fifth in 2007.
4. In 2006, Ryan Howard and David Ortiz were the only players to hit 50 home runs in the season. How many sluggers reached 50 home runs in 2007?

Answer: 2

The Yankees' Alex Rodriguez and the Milwaukee Brewers' Prince Fielder were the only sluggers to reach the 50-mark in the season.
5. Which NL team had the best road record in the 2007 season?

Answer: New York Mets

The others didn't win more than 33 games on the road. Amazingly enough, the Mets were only 41-40 at home, but they were much better on the road as their record was of 47-34. They lost the NL East Division crown on the last day of the season, a loss to the Marlins and a home game for the Mets.
6. Who won the Major League batting crown?

Answer: Magglio Ordonez (Tigers)

Ordonez reached .360 in the season with the Tigers. The others listed didn't reach the .340 mark for the season. This was the first time that Ordonez hit over .315 in a season in his 11 seasons.
7. No teams in 2006 won 100 games in the season. How many teams reached the century mark in 2007?

Answer: 0

Like the 2006 season, all Major League teams were pretty well balanced in both leagues. The Diamondbacks were the only team in the National League to reach the 90-win plateau, then the Red Sox, Yankees, Indians, and Angels of the American League reached that plateau also.
8. Which team in the season hit the most home runs?

Answer: Milwaukee Brewers

The others fell short of the 200-mark by more than 25 home runs in the season. The Brewers hit 232 home runs in the season, led by Prince Fielder with his 50 home runs, and Ryan Braun's 34. It was the first time in the franchise's history to have a player hit 50 home runs.
9. Which batter set a Major League record in 2007 for striking out the most times in a season?

Answer: Ryan Howard

Howard broke Adam Dunn's three-year old record of 195 strikeouts in a season. Dunn of the Reds almost broke his own record in 2006 when he struck out 194 times. 2007 was Howard's fourth season with the Phillies. He struck out 181 times in 2006. Howard set a new season strikeout record on September 30th on the last day of the season, striking out 199 times in 2007.
10. Which pitcher in the season threw for a Triple Crown award?

Answer: Jake Peavy

The others retired before the 2007 season. Peavy led the National League with 19 wins for his Padres, along with his 2.36 ERA and 234 strikeouts.
