Football? That Depends . . . Trivia Quiz

...on what kind of version you're talking about. In my case, it's the kind that Americans call 'soccer'. This quiz is about football movies, and just to spice things up, the questions are in haiku form.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Young Man City fan Gets a pair of lucky boots. Gordon bullies him.

Answer: There's Only One Jimmy Grimble

Move over, Sergio Aguero! Jimmy Grimble (Lewis Mackenzie) is a 15-year-old Manchester City fan who is being bullied at school by 'Gorgeous' Gordon, a David Beckham lookalike with a rich dad, who also happens to be one of the school's best footballers.

He also has an awkward crush on his classmate Sara (played by Samia Ghadie of 'Coronation Street' fame). Harry (Ray Winstone), his mum's ex-boyfriend, regularly takes him to City games and he aspires to play for them himself. His luck changes when an old woman gives him a pair of boots that used to belong to one of City's players; the boots are not magical, but they have a psychological effect on Jimmy and he becomes more confident.
2. We're the hooligans. Go to matches, get in fights. Frodo's a Hammer.

Answer: Green Street

Mordor has nothing on the Boleyn Ground when the Green Street Elite firm are there, as former journalism student Matt Buckner (Elijah Wood, who also played Frodo in the 'Lord of the Rings' films) discovers. He goes to a football match with his brother-in-law's friend Pete (Charlie Hunnam), the leader of the Green Street Elite. Matt becomes a member after some of the GSE rescue him from a pack of Birmingham City fans.

However, things get seriously dark when the GSE go head-to-head with a rival firm, the NTO, culminating in Pete's death at their hands of their leader. ('The Hammers' is the nickname for West Ham United, who formerly played at the Boleyn Ground aka Upton Park, and whose symbol is a pair of hammers, as they formed at an ironworks. 'I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles', which Matt sings at the end, is their theme tune.)
3. Subject: Brian Clough. For a time, he managed Leeds. It did not go well.

Answer: The Damned United

Most British football fans will no doubt be familiar with Brian Clough, who led Nottingham Forest to European Cup glory in the late 1970s. 'The Damned United', however, focuses on his tenure as Leeds manager, long before he managed Forest, with Michael Sheen playing him. Clough had previously criticised Leeds' violent playing style, and a rivalry with their former manager Don Revie (played by Colm Meaney), who left to manage England. Under Clough, Leeds got off to a bad start and he lost his job after 44 days.

He reconciled with his former assistant Peter Taylor (Timothy Spall), who was working at Brighton, and the two would later go on to manage Nottingham Forest.
4. Cavemen play football Versus evil Bronze Age team. Rabbits everywhere.

Answer: Early Man

Moving on to stop-motion animation, 'Early Man' is by Aardman Animations - the same people behind 'Wallace & Gromit' - and tells the story of a tribe of cave people who spend their days hunting rabbits (one of whom is particularly tenacious). One of the tribe, Dug (Eddie Redmayne), is unintentionally kidnapped by Bronze Age invaders, who have forced the tribe out of their homeland and into the badlands.

He finds himself in the middle of a football match, and challenges the Bronze Age team to a match, with the promise that his tribe can have their home back if they win. With the help of Goona (Maisie Williams), who has been excluded from the Bronze Age team due to being a woman, the tribe learn to play football, which was apparently invented by much earlier cavemen kicking around a lump of red-hot asteroid.
5. Prisoners of war Play against a German team. Look out for Pele!

Answer: Escape to Victory

Moore, Ardiles, Summerbee, Pelé - they all appear in 'Escape to Victory', which stars Michael Caine as John Colby, a West Ham player and the captain of a team of prisoners of war from various Allied countries. The team are asked to play against a German team in an exhibition match. Robert Hatch (Sylvester Stallone), an American POW, acts as the team's trainer and is planning an escape.

He successfully escapes to France and meets with the Resistance, but is recaptured. Colby manages to get Hatch onto the team as goalkeeper, although he has to break the current goalie's arm so the Germans won't suspect anything.

The POWs draw 4-4 and escape through a tunnel in the shower room which leads into the Paris sewers.
6. Unhappy postman. Where is Eric Cantona? Ken Loach directed.

Answer: Looking for Eric

Modern life is stressful, and 'Looking for Eric' examines how football can provide an escape from it. In this 2009 film, directed by Ken Loach, Fall bassist Steve Evets plays Eric Bishop, a suicidal postman and football fan whose hero is former Manchester United player Eric Cantona. Bishop smokes his stepson's weed, and starts hallucinating about Cantona (who appears as himself, and like fellow ex-footballer Vinnie Jones, has a decent film career to his name). Cantona appears as a kind of imaginary friend who gives Bishop advice, and helps him to improve his life. Bishop's stepson is also involved with a gang, and Bishop tries to return a gun to the gang, but is set upon by a Rottweiler, and the footage of the dog attack is uploaded to Youtube.

The family are arrested but the police fail to find the gun, as it is hidden in the fridge under some chicken. Bishop gets revenge by organising 'Operation Cantona', which involves a large gang of Manchester United fans (and the man himself) wearing Cantona masks and invading the gangster's house.
7. Greasy chip butties. Sean Bean stars, but does not die. Sheffield United.

Answer: When Saturday Comes

Mortal wounds for Sean Bean? Not this time. In 'When Saturday Comes', Bean - who, incidentally, supports Sheffield United in real life - plays factory worker Jimmy Muir, who is scouted by non-league team Hallam FC, and then by his beloved Sheffield United.

However, his drinking and womanising habits cause problems for his game. Nevertheless, Sheffield United reach the FA Cup semi final, and Jimmy scores the winning penalty. Some critics have pointed out the retrospective similarities between the film and the real life story of Jamie Vardy. Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott, another native of Sheffield and Blades fan, appeared in the film as Jimmy's brother, but the scene was cut. ('The Greasy Chip Butty Song' is Sheffield United's theme tune, a parody of 'Annie's Song' by John Denver.)
8. Arsenal FC. Nick Hornby's a massive fan. Film based on his book.

Answer: Fever Pitch

More than just a music fan, Nick Hornby is also a football fan, and 'Fever Pitch' is a memoir about being an Arsenal supporter. The film version is a fictionalised version of Hornby's book, starring Colin Firth as Paul Ashworth, a teacher and Arsenal fan, and focuses on the 1988-1989 season, when Arsenal won the league.

The climax of the film is centred around Arsenal's final game of the season, against their title rivals Liverpool. A 2005 version directed by the Farrelly brothers, and starring Jimmy Fallon, switched the focus from football to baseball, with the Boston Red Sox in place of Arsenal, and was called 'The Perfect Catch' outside the US to avoid confusion.
9. Keeper gets sent off. Goes to hotel and movies. Murders a woman.

Answer: The Goalkeeper's Fear of the Penalty

Moral of this obscure German film by Wim Wenders, possibly: don't make a goalie angry. The original title of the film is 'Die Angst des Tormanns Beim Elfmeter', and refers to a conversation Joseph Bloch (Arthur Brauss), the goalie in question, has with a travelling salesman about the dilemma of which way to dive when confronted with a penalty. After Bloch is sent off, he goes to a hotel, watches his team concede without him, goes to the movies, pulls a cashier, and murders her. Rather than go into hiding, he hangs around in an ex-girlfriend's hotel and watches a local match. He is obsessed with America, and leaves American coins at the scene of the crime, which act as evidence for the police.

And yes, the other answers are all real films.
10. This story is true. French footballer in close-up. Mogwai did the tunes.

Answer: Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait

Moody French footballer Zinedine Zidane was the subject of a 90-minute documentary filmed in 2006, when he was playing for Real Madrid (who he later ended up managing). It was filmed in real time at a match against Villareal, with 17 cameras, and focused entirely on Zidane's playing style. During the final moments of the match, Zidane was involved in a brawl and was subsequently sent off. Scottish experimental rock band Mogwai provided the soundtrack. (None of the other answers are real - they're parodies of Serge Gainsbourg albums.)
