Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'He scores when he wants, he scores when he wants, Robin van Persie, he scores when he wants..." sang Arsenal fans when RVP was playing for them. Fans of other teams also sang it for their top scorer of choice. The melody for this chant comes from the Bahamian folk song 'Sloop John B', and one particularly famous version is by the Beach Boys. On which album did it appear?

Answer: Pet Sounds

'Sloop John B' is also known as 'The John B Sails', and originates from Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. The Beach Boys' version was the lead single from 'Pet Sounds', released in 1966. Brian Wilson produced and arranged it, but it was Al Jardine who came up with the idea of the Beach Boys covering it after hearing the Kingston Trio's version, titled 'The Wreck of the John B'.

In keeping with the original lyrics, Birmingham City fans had a version which they sang at away matches: 'I wanna go home, I wanna go home, [insert city here] is a ****hole, I wanna go home.' Other chants which use the melody are 'Luis Suarez, your teeth are offside' (sung by Manchester United fans while Suarez was playing for Liverpool), and 'we won it five times', sung by Liverpool fans.
2. Many Liverpool fans on social media use the hashtag 'YNWA', which stands for 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. Gerry and the Pacemakers sang the version of the song played at Anfield before matches, but who wrote it?

Answer: Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II

'Carousel' is a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical about a carnival barker, Billy bigelow, who falls in love with a mill worker, Julie Jordan, 'You'll Never Walk Alone' is sung by Julie's cousin Nettie after Billy dies in an attempted robbery. Gerry and the Pacemakers released their version in 1963, and it became the warm-up music at Anfield, Liverpool's stadium. Liverpool's manager at the time, Bill Shankly, was a huge fan of the song.

Other teams who have adopted 'You'll Never Walk Alone' include Borussia Dortmund (Germany) and Celtic (Scotland).

Many other versions of the song have been recorded by artists such as Aretha Franklin, Melanie C (a Liverpool supporter), Die Toten Hosen, and Tammy Wynette.
3. Herman's Hermits were from Manchester, and during Jose Mourinho's tenure, a certain song by them was played at Old Trafford before matches (and after them if United won). The opening line is 'Woke up this morning, feeling fine/There's something special on my mind', but do you know the name of the song?

Answer: I'm Into Something Good

Manchester United fans came up with their own version of the song, which went as follows: "Woke up this morning feeling fine/Got Man United on my mind/Jose's playing the way that United should/Something tells me I'm into something good."

'I'm Into Something Good' was the debut single by Herman's Hermits, released in 1964. Gerry Goffin and Carole King wrote the lyrics and music. However, while the Herman's Hermits version of 'I'm Into Something Good', is probably the most well-known version, they were not the first artists to record it (that would be Earl-Jean of the Cookies, a few months beforehand). King stated that the song was influenced by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.
4. You fill up my senses Lke a gallon of Magnet Like a packet of Woodbines Like a good pinch of snuff Like a night out in Sheffield Like a greasy chip butty Oh Sheffield United, come thrill me again! That's 'The Greasy Chip Butty Song', Sheffield United's pre-game anthem. It is a parody of which John Denver song?

Answer: Annie's Song

'Annie's Song', also known as 'You Fill Up My Senses', was John Denver's only major UK hit, released in 1974. Flautist James Galway released an instrumental version four years later. The 'Annie' of the title is Denver's wife, Annie Martell Denver, and Denver wrote the song on a ski lift in Aspen, Colorado. Finnish singer Ville Valo, formerly of HIM, released a Finnish-language cover in 2016, entitled 'Olet Mun Kaikuluotain' ('You're My Sonar').

(An explanation for non-Brits: Woodbines are a British brand of cigarettes and Magnet is a bitter made by Yorkshire brewery John Smith's. Grimsby Town have a variation where 'Magnet' is replaced by 'Tetley's, a tea brand.)
5. Manchester City adapted 'Right Here, Right Now' as their pre-match anthem in the early '00s. They've certainly come a long way, baby! Who was the DJ, real name Norman Cook, responsible for the song?

Answer: Fatboy Slim

'Right Here, Right Now' was released in 1998 and is the third single from Fatboy Slim's debut album 'You've Come a Long Way, Baby'. The vocal sample used throughout the song is of Angela Bassett from the film 'Strange Days', and the strings are sampled from 'Ashes, the Rain & I' by the James Gang. The album version is followed by a phone-in on a Boston radio station, featuring an American fan called Brad.

Before his career as a DJ, Norman Cook was the bass player with the Housemartins, a Hull-based indie band. He also recorded dance tracks under the name Pizzaman and Beats International, and Freak Power with trombonist and singer Ashley Slater.
6. Sheffield Wednesday, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa all adopted this song as a club anthem, but Jeff Beck, who recorded the most well-known version of it, likened it to having a pink toilet seat hung round his neck for the rest of his life. Which song would this be?

Answer: Hi Ho Silver Lining

Sheffield Wednesday fans replace 'silver lining' with 'Sheffield Wednesday' when 'Hi Ho Silver Lining' is played at Hillsborough before matches, and fans of other teams also insert their team names into the chorus. The song was written by American songwriters Scott English and Larry Weiss, and was originally recorded by the Attack, a British psychedelic rock band, but the Jeff Beck version is more famous. Beck claimed he only received '40 quid' in royalties for 'Hi Ho Silver Lining'.
7. During the 2018 World Cup, England fans adopted an unlikely song as a football anthem: 'Whole Again' by the Liverpool/Cheshire girl band Atomic Kitten. Which member of the group was NOT in the original line-up?

Answer: Jenny Frost

The England fan version goes: "Looking back the way we first met/I cannot escape, and I cannot forget/Southgate, you're the one/You still turn me on/Football's coming home again." Gareth Southgate was England's manager for the 2018 World Cup. As a player, he had missed a penalty for them at Euro '96 against Germany, the same tournament where 'Three Lions' - the song which contains the line 'football's coming home' - was England's official cup song. It seems things go round in circles in football sometimes.

Atomic Kitten were Kerry Katona, Natasha Hamilton and Liz McClarnon. 'Whole Again' was their first UK Number 1 single in 2001. Katona left due to her pregnancy, and was replaced by Jenny Frost, formerly of Eurovision entrants Precious. Katona sang on 'Whole Again' originally, but when she left, it was re-recorded with Frost, along with parts of the group's debut 'Right Now', and the video re-shot.

(Incidentally, Liz McClarnon is an Everton supporter, and during Roberto Martinez's time as Everton manager, goalkeeper Joel Robles was the subject of a chant by Everton fans parodying 'Whole Again'. It featured the line 'you can play in goal again', as well as some rude lyrics about the team's other goalie, Tim Howard.)
8. Two pieces of instrumental music are associated with Chelsea FC. One of them is 'One Step Beyond' by Madness, whose singer Suggs is a Chelsea supporter. The other one is which reggae track by the Harry J Allstars?

Answer: The Liquidator

'The Liquidator' was recorded in 1969. It was intended for a song called 'What Am I to Do?' by Tony Scott, but producer Harry Johnson bought the rights to the track and credited it to the Harry J Allstars. Bassist Aston 'Family Man' Barrett and drummer Carlton 'Carly' Barrett, both of whom featured on the track, also played with Bob Marley and the Wailers. Chelsea fans clap along to it and shout 'Chelsea' as it plays before matches. Other teams, including Wycombe Wanderers, Northampton Town and Scottish side St Johnstone have also used 'The Liquidator' as a soundtrack to players coming out onto the pitch.

'One Step Beyond' has been played after Chelsea victories. Suggs recorded Chelsea's official 1997 FA Cup final song, 'Blue Day'. (Cup rivals Middlesbrough had 'Let's Dance' by Chris Rea, featuring comedian Bob Mortimer.)
9. Some football clubs' choices of anthem is...a little out there. Cambridge United, for instance, follow a winning match with a song about a type of fruit. It was recorded by both Danny Kaye and Freddy Martin And His Orchestra, and is a reference to a fairground tradition. Can you guess the title of this novelty tune?

Answer: I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts

Yes, 'I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts' really is a football song. Cambridge United fans have even formed a group called 100 Years of Coconuts. The reason behind the song being played at Cambridge games (but only if they win) is that in the '50s, announcer Jack Morgan had a pile of records in front of him in his box at the stadium, and 'I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts' was the one on top. He got into the habit of playing it whenever Cambridge won, and it stuck.

The fairground tradition which is the subject of the song is the coconut shy, which involves lobbing a ball at a coconut on a stand in the hope of knocking it off. Swedish comedian Povel Ramel wrote a Swedish language version, 'Far, Jag Kant Inte Få Upp Min Kokosnöt' ('Dad, I Can't Crack Open My Coconut'), although the lyrics were different. They involved a boy trying to open a tenacious coconut, only to destroy everything around him instead.
10. 'No-one likes us, we don't care' runs a popular Millwall fan chant, which takes its melody from a Sutherland Brothers song called 'Sailing'. Which gravelly-voiced singer recorded his own version in '1975'?

Answer: Rod Stewart

Rod Stewart, himself a keen football fan, recorded 'Atlantic Crossing' - the album which included 'Sailing' - at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio Sound Studio in Alabama. Supposedly, Stewart became interested in the Sutherland Brothers after his then girlfriend Dee Harrington saw them and recommended them to him. The song has also been recorded by Smokie, the Nolan Sisters and Brotherhood of Man, and French-American singer Joe Dassin recorded a French-language version called 'Ma Musique'.

As well as Millwall, the German club Hertha Berlin have a chant based on 'Sailing', 'Nur Nach Hause', which they sing as the players enter the pitch.
