Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first AFC-NFC Pro Bowl was played at the end of the 1970 season, the first season of the post-merger NFL. In what city was this all-star game played?

Answer: Los Angeles

Memorial Coliseum, site of the first Super Bowl, was also the site of the first post-merger all-star game. The NFC won the game 27-6.
2. Which of the following placekickers did NOT walk away with the Pro Bowl MVP award?

Answer: Tom Dempsey

Tom Dempsey's claim to fame was kicking an NFL-record 63-yard field goal, to help New Orleans beat Detroit in a game in 1970. Unlike the rest of the kickers listed here, Dempsey was a straightaway kicker, and had only half of his kicking foot to work with. Longtime Kansas City Chief Jan Stenerud was the first of the three kickers listed to win the Pro Bowl MVP award, winning offensive player of the game honors in 1972 for kicking four field goals in the AFC's 26-13 win. Miami Dolphins' kicker Garo Yepremian kicked five field goals in the AFC's 15-13 win in 1974. And Detroit Lions' kicker Eddie Murray kicked four field goals in the NFC's 21-7 win in 1981.
3. Dan McGuire, the man for whom the Pro Bowl MVP award was named in 1984, was a publicist for which team?

Answer: San Francisco 49ers

Dan McGuire also worked for many years as a sports columnist for the Honolulu Advertiser.
4. In what year did the AFC-NFC Pro Bowl move to Honolulu?

Answer: 1980

To boost attendance and give players incentive to participate, the NFL made the decision to move the Pro Bowl to Honolulu. That makes the NFL the only major sports league to hold its all-star game in a location not in the continental United States. It is also the only all-star game held on a neutral site, and at the end of the sport's season.
5. In the 2004 Pro Bowl, the NFC set a record for scoring how many points in the game?

Answer: 55

Led by Rams quarterback Marc Bulger, who threw for a Pro Bowl-record 4 touchdown passes, the NFC rallied from an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the AFC 55-52. Among other records, this Pro Bowl also marked the highest combined score for two teams (107) and the highest combined net yardage (1,022).

The 55 points by the NFC bested the previous Pro Bowl record of 51 they scored in 2000.
6. In 1984, the AFC set a record for losing by how many points in a game?

Answer: 42

Joe Theismann of the Washington Redskins made up for a lackluster performance in Super Bowl XVIII the previous week by going 21 of 27 with 242 yards and 3 touchdown passes, to lead the NFC in a 45-3 rout of the AFC.
7. In a defense-dominated 1985 Pro Bowl, how did the AFC manage to shut the door on the NFC?

Answer: Fumble return for touchdown

Trailing 14-12 in the fourth quarter, the AFC got a big lift from Kansas City defensive end Art Still, who recovered a fumble and rumbled 83 yards to score the go-ahead points. Seattle Seahawks' kicker Norm Johnson added a 22-yard field goal later to cap off the scoring.

In this game, both teams combined for a record 17 sacks, including four by New York Jets defensive end Mark Gastineau.
8. In the 1976 Pro Bowl, the NFC overcame a 20-9 fourth quarter deficit to pull out a 23-20 win. Which quarterback led the NFC to this improbable comeback?

Answer: Mike Boryla

Boryla threw touchdown passes to Mel Gray and Terry Metcalf to lead the NFC to the comeback win. This was the highlight of Boryla's brief career in the NFL. He spent three of his four years with the Philadelphia Eagles, and as a rookie, led the Eagles to a 36-14 win over Green Bay in 1974.

FunTrivia player malcolmsex gave me a very valuable correction. Originally, I spelled Mike Boryla's (rhymes with "gorilla") name wrong. That's why I couldn't find any information on him on the Internet. Thanks, malcolmsex, and thanks to both pro-football-reference.com and packersnews.com for more information on Mike Boryla.
9. The AFC enjoyed three consecutive victories in the Pro Bowl in 2001, 2002, and 2003. Which of the following statements about that streak was NOT true?

Answer: AFC defenders limit the NFC offenses to 30 total points (2001-2003).

There's no doubt the AFC has been the dominant conference in the Pro Bowl during the opening stages of the 21st Century. But they haven't quite been that dominant. In those 3 games, the NFC scored 67 points.
10. In 2006, whose coaching staffs were responsible for coaching the teams in the AFC-NFC Pro Bowl?

Answer: The two conference runners-up

In 2006, the coaching staffs of the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos supervised the teams involved in the Pro Bowl. That's because they each lost their respective conference championship game. The honor was a reward for their efforts throughout the year and a consolation prize for not making it to the Super Bowl. The rules have sice changed for selections.
