Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I played most of my six NFL seasons with the Vikings as a running back. After retiring in 1977, I turned to acting. I had a major part in 'Hill Street Blues' for a number of years. Who am I?

Answer: Ed Marinaro

The others listed were all defensive backs. Marino was the runner-up to the Heisman Trophy in 1971 before beginning his NFL career in 1972. He really didn't shine with a football, but he did have 13 career touchdowns.
2. In the 1979 NFL draft, three quarterbacks were selected in the first round. They were Phil Simms, Steve Fuller, and Jack Thompson. Which of the following quarterbacks was taken last in the third round of that draft?

Answer: Joe Montana

The others were all retired by 1979. After completing only 13 passes as a rookie, Montana became an instant star with the San Francisco 49ers in 1980. Joe made the Pro Bowl eight times and retired as a Chief in 1994.
3. In 1978, the Chicago Bears almost joined the elite club of having two 1000-yard rushers in a season. Walter Payton was one, and who was the other who finished the season with only 992 yards?

Answer: Roland Harper

The others were not running backs. Payton rushed for 1359 yards in the season while Harper fell just short. In Roland's seven seasons with the Bears, 992 was the closest that he got to a 1000-yard season.
4. Who was the first non-kicker to score 1000 points in his career?

Answer: Jerry Rice

Rice made his name with the 49ers. Ironically, he caught only one touchdown in the 1997 season which put him over the 1000-point mark. Jerry retired as a Seahawk in 2004 after 21 seasons. Rice made the Pro Bowl an amazing 13 times.
5. I was a noted barefoot kicker in the NFL. Who am I?

Answer: Tony Franklin

Except for Dempsey, the others were wide receivers. In 1986, Franklin set a season and career record for barefoot kickers in the NFL with the New England Patriots. In four of his nine seasons, Tony scored more than 100 points in a season. He retired with 767 career points as a Miami Dolphin in 1988.
6. Which team drafted the quarterback great Johnny Unitas, then let him go?

Answer: Pittsburgh Steelers

Unitas went in the ninth round of the 1955 draft to the Steelers. After letting him go, the Colts liked what they saw when they found him playing with the Bluefield Rams of semi-pro football and signed him to a contract. Johnny made the Pro Bowl 10 times as a Colt.
7. After playing as a back-up quarterback for four seasons, I patiently waited for the great Norm VanBrocklin to retire in 1960. In 1961, I was the starting quarterback and made the most of it for the Eagles. I threw for 32 touchdowns and over 3700 yards in the season. Who am I?

Answer: Sonny Jurgensen

The others were kickers. 1961 was Jurgensen's season high for touchdowns, but he later surpassed his 3723 yards in 1961 by throwing for 3747 yards with 31 touchdowns as a Redskin in 1967.
8. In which year did the NFL sign its first television contract for an entire season on a major network?

Answer: 1962

The NFL commissioner at the time was Pete Rozelle, and he spearheaded this campaign to increase the popularity of the NFL.
9. This New York Giants' running back threw 14 touchdown passes throughout his 12-season career. Who was this that later joined the 'Monday Night Football' trio?

Answer: Frank Gifford

Gifford played from 1952-1964. Frank rushed for 34 touchdowns while catching 43 in his career. He went to the Pro Bowl seven times.
10. Famous for the 'Ickey Shuffle' was Cincinnati Bengals' running back Ickey Woods. What was his first name?

Answer: Elbert

Woods made his name as a rookie in 1988. He ran for 1066 yards and 15 touchdowns. Injuries hampered the rest of his career as that was pretty much it. He retired after only four seasons in 1991.
