Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1964, this Minnesota Viking great ran a fumble all the way to the end zone, but it was the wrong one!

Answer: Jim Marshall

Oct. 25, 1964, Marshall picks up a San Francisco 49ers fumble, runs it 66 yards into the end zone the Vikes were defending, and throws the ball away, resulting in a safety.
2. In a 1978 game, all this quarterback had to do to win the game was kneel down and run out the clock. Instead, a hand-off was called from the sidelines. The QB attempted to give the ball to Larry Csonka, but it was fumbled and ran back for the winning score by a future NFL head coach.

Answer: Joe Pisarcik

"The Miracle of the Meadowlands" ended with Philadelphia Eagle Herm Edwards scoring the winning touchdown. The Eagles were out of timeouts, and anyone with any football sense would have known what to do. NY Giants Offensive Coordinator Bob Gibson, who sent the play in, was certainly lacking it that day.
3. In a 2001 season playoff game that sent the Tom Brady and the Patriots on to their first Super Bowl win, the opposing Raider recovered an apparent Brady fumble to squelch their hopes. However, the play was ruled an incomplete pass rather than a fumble because of the so-called "________" rule.

Answer: tuck

This took place in January 19, 2002, at Foxboro Stadium in a snowstorm. The call kept the Pats' drive alive, and Adam Vinatieri became a household name by kicking the tying field goal, and later, in overtime, the winning one. The tuck rule states that if a QBs arm is moving forward, even to "tuck" the ball rather than pass it, an incompletion is called if the ball is knocked out.
4. Oakland vs. San Diego, 1978: With time running out, Raiders QB Kenny Stabler was about to be sacked by Charger Fred Dean. Thinking quickly, Stabler intentionally fumbled the ball forward, and his teammates batted the ball onward into the end zone, where it was recovered by whom to win the game?

Answer: Dave Casper

Football fans know this play as "The Holy Roller," and it led to an NFL rule change.
5. Perhaps the most famous play in NFL history, "The Immaculate Reception" was made by whom?

Answer: Franco Harris

Oakland Raiders @ Pittsburgh Steelers: December 23, 1972. Pittsburgh trailed 6-7 fourth and ten with 22 seconds left on their own 40 yard line. Terry Bradshaw threw to John Faqua on the Raiders' 35 yard line but Faqua was knocked to the ground and the ball sailed backwards end of end. Franco Harris scooped up the ball just before it hit the ground.

Half-Italian, half African-American, Franco Harris helped lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to four Super Bowl victories, and wound up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This victory over the Oakland Raiders, however, only allowed the Steelers to advance to be beaten by the eventual Super Bowl champs, the Miami Dolphins.
6. The victory by the Tennessee Titans over the Buffalo Bills that sent the Titans on to Super Bowl XXXIV is known as "The _________________ Miracle."

Answer: Music City

In the AFC playoffs at the end of the 1999 season, the Buffalo Bills just kicked a field goal to take a one-point lead over the Tennessee Titans with 16 seconds left. Lorenzo Neal received the kick, handed off to Frank Wycheck, who made a cross-field lateral to Kevin Dyson, who then streaked down the sideline for a 75-yard winning TD.

The Titans went on to the Super Bowl, where they lost to Kurt Warner and the Rams. "Music City" refers to of course, Nashville, where the game was played.
7. The "Ice Bowl", played between the Packers and the Cowboys in the 1967 NFL Championship game, was won with which type of play?

Answer: Quarterback sneak

The setting: December 31, 1967, Lambeau Field. The temperature: 14 degrees (Fahrenheit) below zero, with a wind chill of nearly 50 below. The Green Bay Packers are hosting the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL Championship game for the second year in a row. The Cowboys lead 17-14 with 16 seconds left, and GB has the ball on the Dallas one-yard line. Coach Lombardi and QB Bart Starr agree to try a QB sneak, which works and sends the Pack on to Super Bowl II, which they win, as they did the SB I.
8. In probably the greatest comeback win in NFL history, Frank Reich, subbing for Buffalo Bills starter Jim Kelly, led the Bills to an overtime playoff victory after being down 35-3 early in the second half. Who was the Bills' opposition that day, January 3rd, 1993?

Answer: Houston Oilers

Like millions, I turned this game off by halftime. Tuning back later to catch the start of the next game, I was amazed to see that the game was tied in overtime.
9. I've heard it said that Joe Montana has seen more touchdowns from the seat of his pants than Pat Summerall. "The Catch" was one of these. Who caught this amazing pass that sent the Niners on to their first Super Bowl appearance and win?

Answer: Dwight Clark

The Cowboys, for all their success in the NFL, have been victims of so many great plays like this one. The Ice Bowl, the Catch, Lynn Swann's Super Bowl acrobatics, Mike Curtis' pick, and Jim O'Brien's kick in SB V.
10. In a 1985 Monday Night Football game, Redskins QB Joe Theismann took a flea-flicker lateral from John Riggins, but before he could deliver the ball downfield, he was hit by two superb defenders. On replay, viewers saw one of the most gruesome sights ever shown to football fans, Theismann suffering a very nasty compound fracture to his leg. This injury ended the QB's career. Who were the two defenders who combined for this memorable sack?

Answer: Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson

Watching replays of this is not for the faint of heart. Theismann, of course, has gone on to a long career as a broadcaster.
