Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Art Luppino's number?

Answer: 22

Art Luppino's #22 was retired in 1999 in a halftime ceremony. Luppino's #22 was the first number ever retired at the University of Arizona. I was at that game. Unfortunately, Arizona lost that game.
2. Which of the following great Arizona running backs had the highest single game rushing output?

Answer: Trung Canidate

Trung ran for 288 yards and 3 touchdowns on 18 attempts against hated rival Arizona State in 1998. Trung's 3 TDs came on runs of 80, 66, and 48 yards. Jim Upchurch's single game high was 232 yards against UTEP in 1973. Art Luppino's career high for a game was 228 yards against New Mexico State in 1954. David Eldridge's single game acme was 205 yards against UCLA in 1989.

Another interesting note about Luppino's performance against NMSU in 1954 was that he scored 4 rushing TDs -- and the total amount of times he carried the ball in that game was a mind-boggling 6.
3. How many touchdown runs did Trung Canidate have over his career?

Answer: 26

Probably the most amazing stat about Trung Canidate is that on his 26 touchdown runs he gained 1139 yards. That is an average of 43.8 yards per touchdown carry. His final touchdown run -- in 1999 at Arizona State -- went for 80 yards.
4. Who is Arizona's career passing yardage leader?

Answer: Tom Tunnicliffe

Tom Tunnicliffe gained 7618 yards from 1980-83. He also holds the record for most career TD passes, with 46.
5. Who holds the school record for most passing yards in a season?

Answer: Jason Johnson

Jason Johnson threw for 3327 yards in 2002. Unfortunately, that year he was also sacked more than any other quarterback to ever play for UA, so that offset most of the yards that he threw for.
6. Who is Arizona's career leader in receiving yards?

Answer: Bobby Wade

Bobby Wade amassed 3351 receiving yards over his career at Arizona, which spanned 1999-2002. He also returned punts and kickoffs for the Wildcats.
7. Which Wildcat won the very first Mosi Tatupu Award, given annually to the nation's top special teams player?

Answer: Chris McAlister

Chris McAlister played cornerback for the Wildcats from 1996-1998. He was also an amazing returner. Against Hawaii in 1998, he scored a touchdown on the opening kickoff of the Wildcats' season. He earned the inaugural Mosi Tatupu Award in 1998 as the nation's most outstanding special teams player. Chris started in the Super Bowl for the Baltimore Ravens in 2000, a game that they won.
8. In 1986, Arizona's bitter rival, the Arizona State Sun Devils, went to their first Rose Bowl and defeated Michigan, finishing with a #2 national ranking. Their one loss -- to Arizona -- prevented them from winning the national title that year. Which Arizona defensive back sealed UA's 34-17 victory in that game by returning an interception 106 yards for a touchdown?

Answer: Chuck Cecil

Chuck Cecil's amazing interception return is shown before every Arizona home game in the team's intro video. Even though I've seen many replays of the play, it still gives me chills -- and brings a huge smile to my face -- every time I see it. He later played in the NFL, where he was forced to retire for too many helmet-to-helmet tackles.
9. What is the name of Arizona's OFFICIAL fight song?

Answer: Fight! Wildcats Fight!

"Fight! Wildcats Fight!" is the OFFICIAL fight song of the University of Arizona, although "Bear Down, Arizona" is definitely the most famous UA pep song. "All Hail, Arizona" is the alma mater of the U of A, and this song is played and sung after every UA home game. ("Arizona, How I Love Thee" is a song title that I just made up.)
10. What is the rally cry of Arizona athletics that is painted on the field?

Answer: Bear Down

In 1926, student body president and Arizona QB John "Button" Salmon was in an auto wreck that proved fatal. While on his deathbed, he told his coach, J.F. "Pop" McKale, to "Tell them...tell the team to bear down." A monument to Salmon -- along with a bust of him -- now stands in front of McKale Center, home of Wildcat basketball. UA's most famous song (but not its fight song), "Bear Down, Arizona," was based on this rally cry.
