Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the official Arsenal crest, the motto "Victoria Concordia Crescit", is inscribed, but what does the other motto state which is contained within a smaller crest on the crest itself?

Answer: "Deus Per Omnia"

'Deus Per Omnia', actually means 'In God we trust'. The others are not correct but would be fun if they were - 'si vis pacem, para bellum' means: if you want peace, prepare for war. 'Parans, Volens, Potans' means: ready willing and able. Finally 'semper ubi sub ubi' means: always wear underwear.
2. Which of the following managed Arsenal for the longest time?

Answer: Stuart Houston

Steve Houston managed AFC for a total of 508 days (473 days and then 35 days after Rioch). Rioch had 431 days in charge. Burtenshaw only had 50 days in charge. Rice had a mere 14 days in charge.
3. Which is true about Highbury?

Answer: A horse was buried under the North Bank when it was constructed

If you didn't get it correct, you have been watching too much of one of "Back to the Future", "History Channel" or "The Arsenal Stadium Mystery". The truth is that when they were building the North bank, they asked for local people to help put rubbish into the hole for the foundations, and a guy backed his horse and cart too close to the hole and the horse went in as well, and as a result they had to destroy the horse.
4. The sterling sales turnover of Arsenal Football Club plc in the financial year 2002 was closest to the population of which country in the same period?

Answer: Philippines

The Philippines population was around 85M as compared to Arsenal's turnover of 91M in 2002. Canada only has a population of 30M. The others were substantially larger Japan at 127M and India at 1.04Bn.
5. Which of the following is NOT true?

Answer: Arsenal won the first FA Cup final held outside England

Arsenal became the first team ever to lose (not win) the FA Cup Final outside England, when Liverpool beat AFC 2-1 in Cardiff on May 12th 2001. The rest of course is true. In the "Hitch Hikers Guide", during the first episode, the barman claims that it would be a lucky escape for Arsenal if the world does indeed end later that day.

In May 1998, Arsene Wenger became the first foreign manager to win the Premiership with an English club. Arsenal did indeed wear red because of Nottingham Forest, although the white sleeves were introduced later.
6. Arsenal were promoted to the first division in 1919, as Spurs were relegated, but what position were they in, in the second division when promoted?

Answer: Fifth

It is strange but true. Spurs were 19th in the First division, and Arsenal were 5th in the second division. The Football League ruled in 1919, that they would extend the First Division from 20 to 22 teams. Although the procedure up until then had been to re-elect the bottom clubs from the previous season, and to promote the top clubs from the Second Division.

However, when the League AGM was convened, a discussion took place as to which teams would be promoted. Once four of the teams had been agreed upon, League President John McKenna made a speech recommending that Arsenal be given the remaining First Division place over Spurs, namely due to AFC's service to the league, their longevity, and Arsenal having been in the League 15 years longer than Tottenham.

Some say this was the beginning of the North London rivalry.
7. If you attend a match at Highbury you will hear many chants of 'goona! goona!' but "Goona Goona" is actually a registered name of what?

Answer: Surrealist musical about child abuse in America

It is a musical written by Megan Terry and is about family violence and abuse, and middle-class American attitudes to it.
8. Which of the following is true?

Answer: Ted Drake scored 7 goals in a match

Brady was at Arsenal for 6 seasons (73/74 to 79/80). Vieira was born in Dakar, Senegal. Adam's book was called "Addicted", it was Merson's whose was called "Hero and Villain". The only remaining answer was actually true. Aston Villa vs Arsenal on the 14th of December 1935, Drake scored all Arsenal goals in a 1-7 win.

He scored a hat-trick in the first half 15th, 28th, and 34th, and a double hat-trick in the second half 48th, 50th, and 58th, and finally again in the 89th minute. This was with a badly twisted knee, and he apparently scored the seven goals in only eight scoring attempts.

The eighth hit the cross bar, but Drake claimed that it bounced over the line.
9. Who was Arsenal's most successful manager in the 100 year period from June 1902 to June 2002, as measured by the best 'days-in-charge per honour-won'?

Answer: Arsene Wenger

Its a close one but Arsene Wenger spent 2,047 days to win 2 league titles, and 2 cups wins or 512 days per honour. George Graham spent 3,205 days to achieve 2 league wins, 1 cup, 2 league cups, and 1 Euro cup wins or 534 days per honour. The rest are substantially less.
10. Which player made most league appearances for Arsenal during the 20th Century?

Answer: David O'Leary

David O'Leary made 558 appearances in the league for Arsenal between 1975 and 1993.
