1. Who took over the reins as NRL CEO, in season 2002?

Answer: Gallop

David Gallop,a thin, quiet man, used to be a lawyer. He handled his first season well, considering the Bulldogs' salary cap scandal. The others all had it at some stage, David Moffett being the man Gallop replaced.
2. What country's representatives are known to be wearing the 'green and gold'?

Answer: Australia

The Kangaroos are Australia's national team, and Australia took over from Great Britain as the best league footballers sometime in the mid-20th century.
3. Which of the following is not a term for something in the game of rugby league?

Answer: Line-Out

A line-out occurs in rugby union after the ball has gone out of the field and needs to be brought back into play. In rugby league a scrum or a tap is used. Try and conversion are in both league and union, as a way of scoring points.
4. Who captained the Queenslanders in State Of Origin for 22 consecutive matches during the 1980s?

Answer: Lewis

Wally Lewis, "The King", played in the first ever State-Of-Origin match in 1980. He played for Brisbane from 1988 to 1990 (during most of his career he played in the Queensland competition).
5. Parramatta Eels have two colours for their uniform, blue and ____ ?

Answer: yellow

Newcastle Knights are blue and red, and Canterbury-Bankstown are blue and white. The Eels were established in 1947.

Answer: Melbourne

Of course this was Melbourne, because Melbourne won the NRL Premiership in 1999, beating St George Illawarra 20-18 with a last minute penalty try.
7. What team were known as the Tri-colours or as the Roosters?

Answer: Eastern Suburbs

The Roosters are the only Foundation club never to have missed out on a season. They are now known as the Sydney Roosters (after being the Sydney City Roosters from 1995 until 1999).

Glebe were a foundation member of the NSWRL in 1908 (they were the first rugby league club formed in Australia). Their last season in the NSWRL competition was 1929.
8. Which English Super League club team did the Sydney Roosters beat on Valentine's Day 2003 to become World Club Champions?

Answer: St Helens

The score was 38-0, eerily this is the exact same score with which they beat St George in the NSWRL Premiership in 1975 (known as Eastern Suburbs back then). Also, both losing teams were/are known as the Saints. This was the biggest winning margin in World Club Challenge history.

The Roosters also won the first WCC title against Saint Helens 25-2 in early 1976 after the premiership win over St George.
9. Which of the following rugby league grounds is located in NSW (some of the names have been changed since they were played on)?

Answer: St Luke's

St Luke's in in St Luke's Park, Concord, NSW; in the same place as Concord Oval (Concord Stadium).
Bennett Oval is in Whyalla, SA.
Carrara Stadium is on Gold Coast, QLD.
Bruce Stadium is in Canberra, ACT.
10. What is the mascot of the team that won the Rugby League World Sevens in 1998 and 2003?

Answer: Eels

Parramatta won two competitions in a row. In 2003 they beat England Lions in the final, and Nathan Hindmarsh was the player of the tournament.
11. What team re-entered the NSWRL competition in 1988?

Answer: Newcastle Knights

They were in the original 1908 competition and also played in 1909; in 1910 they left and were replaced by Annandale. The Knights won their first premiership in 1997 in the ARL competition. Brisbane also joined the NSWRL in 1988, but Illawarra and Canberra had joined in 1982.
12. From 1971 to 2021, what was the only way in rugby league to score 2 points in one scoring move?

Answer: Goal

This means both a penalty goal or a conversion after a try. In 1971 they changed field goals from two points to one point; Eric Simms from Souths kicked too many to have an entertaining game. Tries used to be worth 3 points, but are now 4.
In 2021 a field goals from more than 40m out were changed from one point to 2 pts.
13. What's the first name of the South Sydney player that made a reputation for himself by kicking many field goals?

Answer: Eric

Eric Simms has the record for the most field goals kicked in a career, which is 86. He is one of the reasons why the ARL reduced the value of a field goal to 1 point (instead of 2 pts) in 1971.
14. Which team took out the NSWRL Premiership of 1990?

Answer: Raiders

The Canberra Raiders won this final 18-14 against the Penrith Panthers. The Western Reds and the Adelaide Rams didn't enter competition until 1995.
15. Which player was the first 'big name' to sign for the NSWRL in 1908, and has an award named after him?

Answer: Dally Messenger

His real name was Herbert Henry Messenger. He played for the mighty Eastern Suburbs in 1908 and from 1910-1913, taking a part in the club's first premiership victories in 1911 and 1912. He defected from rugby union to join the league, and the Dally M Best & Fairest Award is named after him. The first winner of this was Robert Laurie in 1980, for South Sydney.
